Mix trick or trash?
We’re going to film a video called “mix trick or trash?” for YouTube. Well read out a common mixing tip, then each vote if it’s a great trick, or total trash. What are the most controversial mixing tips and tricks you can think of that we could cover?

Need help with the Foundation First method
Currently I am working on the Final Mix assignment on MP101. I am trying the "Foundation"- method. I watched the instruction video several times and I get my Snare to -5 Db TP en the VU-meter around 0. Then I set the Kick to peak -5 Db TP. As soon as I combine them, my peak occasionally jumps to -2.2 Db TP when there's a fill on the snare (end of the chorus). I cannot seem to get them together at -5 TP. Or should I just focus an that fill? Can this be because of a build-up of frequencies? I tried EQ-ing things, that does not seem to get the job done. Any recommendations/tips? Or should I just wait the the Foundation-method and finish MP101 first? Thanks in advance!

I agree. I'm still not sure what to do when my 'foundation' fails the limiter stress test (eg sounds distorted because and there's too much limiting) - the Cheat Sheet doesn't say. It seems almost impossible to get all the levels and the sound to work. I hope that the meter levels are just a very rough guide and its the sound that counts, but I still find it difficult to get this to work. Any insights would be welcome.
Kontakt 8 in the modern studio
I started off my music journey with the free stuff that Native Instruments gave some 10+ years ago. I didn't buy the thousand+ dollar Komplete software back then, and after playing and getting nowhere I gave up and did other things. Now ive been making music for the past couple of years. I do own some Native Instruments software purchased, and even a S61 keyboard. But most of my music seems to come from other plugins from Arturia, SoundPaint, AAS, UVI I have looked at the deal with Native Instruments that will likely end real soon is quite good for Komplete15 as I have some of the apps. Funnily they give you a better discount for owning a cheap A series keyboard and nothing with the S. I look at what the Komplete offers and mostly it's a bunch of Kontakt libraries and some synths that I already own. ( like Massive and Massive X, FM8 ). so it seems rather pointless to buy that as I don't really need the sounds that come with Standard. Where I am more interested is with the one program that I don't have that seems to be a central part. Kontakt. I have the play version that works with a bunch of the free libraries and function. What does the FULL version bring to the table that would be worth while? The software regularly goes for $380cdn but if I can get a promotion for $99 it might be worthwhile if it does something worthwhile. I am interested in moving towards writing more symphonic music and adding orchestra sounds into my music. I know that to get serous I will need to purchase some of the better libraries that are out there. Most of them I think will run on play but I am not totally sure, I have heard there are lots of free libraries for Kontakt that require the full license but I don't know if that has really changed or if they are worth the cost of the software. Any help is appreciated.

Kontakt player gives you access to loads of free 3rd party instruments, some very good, some not so good, but its always interesting to explore them. Full Kontakt opens up far more possibilities because its the most popular player for so many virtual instruments, some of them pretty amazing, and its really worth having so you're not locked out of such things. Of course, it depends on what sounds you actually want/need but I'd say buy Kontakt while its on sale and you're unlikely to regret it because of the possibilities it opens up. To draw you in you'll gets some free NI instruments plus a time-sensitive discount on other NI products and sounds, but as suggested above, audition things carefully to make sure you'll get some use from them. NI seem to pushing Kontakt along the path of providing tools to make things easier for those with limited keyboard (or even musical) skills. You might or might not like that, but such things are there should you wish to use them. One final comment is that nothing lasts forever, and that includes Kontakt. Every few years it gets upgraded but owners can usually upgrade at a good price, or wait for a while and take advantage of another sale (eg Black Friday).
Question
Hello, I haven't seen Jake in a moment, is he good, is he still part of our mentors? I miss his warness while teaching and his "goog-timer"LOL

Another vote for Jake from me! I wish him well.
String library session section - what’s best?
I am going to buy a new string library and would appreciate your experience and knowledge to help me make a proper choice. I am NOT looking for a massive cinematic orchestra. More a 14-piece section for performance of string arrangements as we hear them in productions from Nashville or as they were done with Sinatra back in the days and today on albums as the wonderful new country album with Paul Carack. Hoping you are willing to share some ideas!

'Best' in what way for what application though? Background or upfront? Pop component or full orchestration? Multi-articulations or just basic longs and shorts? Ensemble, chamber or solo instruments? You can find lots of solutions and even more opinions! I would suggest really thinking about what you need now and/or will need in future before spending anything. You could also try some demos to see how you get on with them. IMHO they all have strengths and weakness. I've also found it difficult to swap string libraries whilst keeping the same midi because of the differences in sounds. My best recommendation would be another vote to check out some Youtube videos from the rather eccentric (in a good way) Guy Mitchelmore. Its surprising how far he can get with Spitfire's free offerings. Yes, you could go full on Abbey Road Strings, but if you're applications don't demand all the mic options and other bells and whistles you might be content with something a lot simpler from Project SAM or Crow Hill, for example. It sounds like a cop-out of an answer but ......... it depends. What's the best car? 😎
