Arrangement -- Prevent Mix problems before they start

This is a really good video on Arrangement. Good arrangements can prevent your mix from 'frequency fighting'. It can create dynamics and simply make your song sound much better before it gets to the mix stage.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard pros with all the hit records under their belts when asked 'how can I get a better sound?' ( often associated with needing a new piece of gear or plugin )

The answer.... 'great musicians + great arrangement'. We are often restricted by our time, wallets, talent, but everyone composing music can work on arrangement to make their best effort just that much better.

If you think of Mastering as polish on a Mix, then Arrangement is the preparation of the tracks before they are passed to the Mix stage. Not unlike sanding defects out of a piece of wood before applying a finish coat. If you have defects, scratches, etc., they will simply be amplified once the finish coat is applied and you start over or have to try to sell your finished work as "B-Stock".
