Planning for spring
At our meetup, some folks asked me about soil amendments and dealing with compaction to be able to start a new flower garden. I'll be diving into this and more questions live here in a few days. What’s one garden decision you’re feeling unsure about right now? Big or small. There’s no rush to resolve it, sometimes naming the question is the work. Feel free to share if you’d like.
Thinking in Layers
I’ve been noticing something while visiting gardens in a much warmer climate — how clearly the structure shows when all the layers are visible. Ground covers. Herbaceous plants. Shrubs. Canopy. So here’s this week’s question: If you step back and look at your yard right now, which layer feels missing — or underdeveloped? Is it groundcover? Evergreen structure? Shrubs? Something else? I'm excited to start talking about flower gardens. Next week we’ll start turning this into a simple layered template you can actually sketch into your yard. For now, just notice.

When the Garden Disappears
With this winter storm moving through, it might feel like everything outside is just… snow. Still, what’s one thing you’ve noticed in your yard recently? Maybe where snow is piling up or melting first, how the wind moves through your space, or how the landscape feels different when everything slows down. And for those of you in milder zones, what are you noticing as you look ahead to the growing season? A sentence, a photo, or just reading along is perfect. my share: one of my go to plants for four seasons show: Redtwig Dogwood. ⛄
