RIP, Olancha?
Now that 395 bypasses Olancha, is it destined to become another Inyo county ghost town? Other than the Jerky store and the Mobil station, there was never much there to begin with. I remember the old diner, but that closed years ago. Back in the 00s, the Mobil station used to be my first stop for gas when making the drive north.
Mammoth is Closed Today due to Avalanche Risk
Message on Mammoth's site: All mountain operations are suspended today due to high avalanche danger. Wow.
Snow Fences
I'm sure you've all seen the snow fences on 203 on the outskirts of town, and perhaps you've also seen the ones on 395 just north of the 203. I was always under the impression that they were designed to capture snow in front of the fence, but this video explains how they work. The open fences disrupt the wind and causes the snow to mound behind the fence. Kinda cool video from an engineering perspective. The video specifically talks about Wyoming snow fences but I'm guessing they're all functionally the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL1_9jMKjO0
Mammoth by the Numbers
Was on the chair this weekend listening to a couple guys talk about trying to ski the mountain by taking the chairs in sequence. I was looking at the map and... 1 to 2, easy 2 to 3, easy 3 to 4, tricky, probably easier on skis than a snowboard as long as you stay high enough to get to Solitude, 4 to 5, easy 5 to 6, seems easy enough crossing over to 3 6 to 7, nope 7 to 8, probably doable though you'd probably end up walking the last 50-100 yards 8 to 9, easy 9 to 10, doable 10 to 11, nope 11 to 12, easy 12 to 13, easy 13 to 14, easy 14 to 15, maybe on skis, but it would be a constant high traverse from Scotty's to Dry Creek that I'm going to say no 15 to 16, easy 16 to 17, easy 17 to 20, easy, but we have to assume 20 is running 20 to 21, easy 21 to 22, doable 22 to 23, nope. 23 to 25, thinking no, but if you could traverse from Cornice to Dave's and get to Goldhill, maybe, but again, a gnarly traverse. Seems mostly doable but there's some I just can't see the connection unless you're a superhero. Did I miss anything?
Incoming storms...(around 12/20-22)
Chris Tomer's latest report is calling for 13" with more above tree line for Mammoth. Finger's crossed. But wow, look at Steven's Pass and Baker. Crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMZ3pA75-7s
