Data Analytics Project 19 : Power BI Hollywood Stories Report
This is my latest Power BI project, the Hollywood Stories Report! This interactive dashboard dives deep into the film industry’s landscape between 2007 and 2011, transforming raw cinematic data into strategic insights. By examining the intersection of genre dominance, studio performance, and critical reception, this report provides a clear roadmap of what truly drove success in Hollywood during this peak production era.
The data reveals that Comedy was the undisputed heavyweight, accounting for a massive 55.41% of total films and leading all genres with a profitability score of 153. Trailing behind were Romance and Drama, capturing 20.27% and 17.57% of the market share respectively. Interestingly, while major studios are household names, Independent studios actually outperformed them in overall profitability, securing a top score of 118 compared to Disney’s 44 and Warner Bros.’ 39.
On the performance front, the analysis highlights that production activity peaked in 2008 and 2010, with both years contributing 25.68% of the total film volume. Through advanced scatter plots, I explored the complex relationship between Audience Scores, Rotten Tomatoes ratings, and Worldwide Gross. The results show a fascinating trend: while high critical acclaim often aligns with audience approval, it does not always guarantee a massive box office payday, revealing the unpredictable nature of global film markets.
Technically, this project utilized Power Query for data normalization and DAX for custom profitability metrics. Building these visualizations allowed me to practice identifying market leaders and analyzing commercial outliers. I am excited to continue leveraging data analytics to uncover hidden patterns in the entertainment industry and beyond!
