One of the hardest things as a basketball player is sitting on the bench when you know you’re capable of more.
But before you quit.
Before you transfer.
Before you blame your coach.
Ask yourself one question: WHY?
Why aren’t you playing?
And be brutally honest with yourself.
Are you missing something your coach is looking for?
Are you making the same mistakes over and over?
Are you following your coach’s advice?
Are you doing the little things that earn trust?
Are you defending?
Are you making the right reads?
Are you taking care of the ball?
Are you bringing energy every possession?
Are you actively trying to get better…
or are you spending more time complaining about playing time than you are working to earn it?
And don’t just ask yourself.
Ask your coaches. Ask your teammates.
“What’s one thing I can do better?”
Then listen.
Don’t get defensive. Don’t make excuses. Don’t explain why you think they’re wrong.
Take the feedback and go to work.
Because sometimes the reason you’re not playing isn’t that you’re being overlooked.
Sometimes there’s something you’re not seeing.
And sometimes you are doing everything right and you still aren’t getting the opportunity you want. That’s basketball. You can’t control every decision a coach makes.
But you can control how you respond.
Control your effort.
Control your attitude.
Control your preparation.
Control your development.
Control how you show up every day.
Give yourself the chance to look back and know you did everything you could before you decide to make a major change.
Because transferring might be the right decision someday.
Quitting might be the right decision for some people.
But don’t make a permanent decision based on a temporary frustration.
Before you blame everyone else, look in the mirror.
Find what you can improve.
Fix it.
Work.
Earn trust.
And make it impossible to question how badly you want to be on that floor.
Don’t just ask for playing time.
Become the player your team can’t afford to keep off the floor.
