I know you’re probably wondering what picking your person has to do with basketball—and why it matters so much.
The truth is, it has everything to do with it.
And honestly, it has everything to do with your future.
In high school, you’re already balancing school, a sport, friendships, family, and everything else life throws at you. There are only so many hours in a day. If you choose someone who doesn’t understand the demands of your goals, eventually something is going to suffer.
Maybe it’s your sport.
Maybe it’s school.
Maybe it’s your mental health.
Maybe it’s the relationship itself.
The right person won’t make you feel guilty for chasing something that matters to you.
They’ll support you.
They’ll understand that sometimes you have to work when everyone else is hanging out. That sometimes you have to say no. That sometimes the extra workout, the early morning, the late night, or the sacrifice is necessary because you’re trying to become someone you’re not yet.
And you have to be willing to give that same support back.
For me, that person is my wife.
There were times when I was getting three workouts in a day, and she was there for nearly every one of them. Sometimes she was rebounding. Sometimes she was reading a book while I worked. Sometimes she was simply sitting there.
But she was present.
She never made me feel bad for wanting more. She never made me choose between her and my dreams. She understood that my goals weren’t a threat to our relationship—they were a part of who I was.
There were even times I had to leave the country and be gone for extended periods of time to play. And even then, I knew I could trust her to hold down the fort while I chased something I believed in.
That kind of support is priceless.
The person you choose can have an incredible impact on your mental health—for better or for worse. They can either give you peace when life gets hard or add weight to everything you’re already carrying.
They can help you become the best version of yourself, or slowly convince you to become less of who you were meant to be.
And that’s why picking your person matters.
Find someone who celebrates your ambition.
Someone who understands your sacrifices.
Someone who supports your dreams without making you feel guilty for having them.
Someone who will stand beside you when things are easy—and even more importantly, when they’re not.
And remember, it goes both ways.
Be the person for them that you hope they’ll be for you.
Because the right relationship shouldn’t force you to choose between love and becoming who you’re meant to be.
It should give you the freedom, support, and confidence to become that person together.
Pick wisely.
I know I did. ❤️🏀
