Research Insights: How Digital Devices Shape Everyday Family Life
A couple of years ago, I took part in a research project about how families use phones, tablets, computers, and other digital devices in everyday life -- and how that shapes family relationships.
One thing we found especially interesting is that technology itself usually wasn’t "the problem." Instead, digital devices often became part of deeper everyday family needs and dynamics -- connection, independence, control, support, routines, boundaries, and even care.
Four big themes appeared again and again in the interviews:
✔️ meeting everyday family needs
✔️ family roles
✔️ conflicts and disagreements
✔️ rules and negotiation around technology use
The research reminded me that family life with technology is rarely black and white.
Devices can create tension, but they can also help families stay connected, organized, informed, and emotionally close.
I'm sharing a visual from the study below.
