Medusa heads
I also visited the Basilica Cistern, a huge underground water storage place in Istanbul. It was built to store and supply water for the palace and nearby buildings. Inside, there were hundreds of beautiful stone columns standing in the water.
What I remember most clearly are the two huge Medusa heads. They were used as bases for columns, and strangely, ....At the bottom of two columns, there were two huge Medusa heads used as bases. One was placed upside down, and the other was turned sideways.
I remember hearing that people were afraid of Medusa's power, so the heads were placed upside down and sideways. But the real reason is still unknown.
Some parts of the cistern, including the Medusa heads, were brought from older buildings and reused. That made the place even more mysterious and fascinating to me.
I remember seeing many fish swimming between the columns. With the water, the fish, the endless rows of columns, and the Medusa heads, the whole place felt mysterious and unforgettable.
