A True Story
This is a true story.
When I was in fifth grade, around 11 years old, our graduating class did a work-study project and planted a field of watermelons. During summer vacation, my classmate Zhu Zhongcai and I took shifts watching the melon patch. He kept trying to get me to pick a watermelon and go eat it in the bridge culvert. I told him I had watermelon to eat—my grandpa grew a lot of watermelons. But after he kept pushing me, I finally caved.
Just as I was eating the watermelon, my classmate Xu Derong caught me and reported me to the teacher.
One day—I think it was the day of the celebration assembly—they called the two of us out by name in front of the whole school and criticized us, saying we had stolen watermelons while on watch, that we had stolen the very melons we were supposed to be guarding. Actually, we didn’t dare go that day; we heard about it later from classmates.
