Burundian Nyumba style build
My family in Burundi sent these photos back to me as reference for their traditional Nyumba (house) style of build. Thatched roofing is preferred. I told them about the Cob style and we shall see what develops in our discussion!

Prepping pallets
Getting the pallets ready, filling in the spaces with used fence boards. Used a nail gun for the support, and used a Brad nailer for the fence boards. One down 10 to go.

Digging post holes
Dug all the holes for the 12 sided cobbin, rented a groundhog, $100 for four hours. Was able to dig all the holes in about a half an hour 💪. I’ve got another gazebo project. I’m working on, with 8 x 8 posts, so needed a 12 inch diameter hole for that, so I just used the same auger bit for the cobbin, the holes are definitely wider than needed, oh well. @Sir Cobalot what is the exact distance you recommend for the 12 sided from center point to inside post?

Finished the first layer of cob on the exterior of my structure. I think It has gotten too cold here to work on the interior for risk of freezing and cracking. Looks like I could be waiting until spring for completion.

How to make a flour paste
Hey y’all, here’s a little video on how to make a flour paste. I usually use wheat flour, but you can also use rice or tapioca flour. In my instructional video on how to build a palletable cobin didn’t really show this process very thoroughly. It’s an important thing to know how to do because I use this for lots of different purposes, such as adding sand to it to paint over a smooth wood surface to make a t course to allow the cob to adhere to the wall and to make a clay plaster and for a clay paint I used to make the ratio six parts water then mix two parts water to one part flour together and add that to the six parts boiling water but it seems like for parts. Water is better but I have done it six parts water as well. You get to see my outdoor kitchen I’ve been enjoying as well while building my current cobin.
