I’m Asking Americans to Stand With Rhode Island’s Immigrant Communities
My name is David Bedard, and I’m 16 years old. Even at my age, I’ve seen how deeply the presence of ICE affects families in Rhode Island. I’ve watched people in my community live with fear — not because they’ve done anything wrong, but because aggressive enforcement tactics can tear their lives apart without warning.
Immigrants are a vital part of Rhode Island. They make up nearly 14% of our population and play essential roles in healthcare, hospitality, and local businesses. They’re our neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and friends. When ICE disrupts these communities, it harms the entire state — and it reflects a larger problem happening across the country.
Research shows that ICE operations push families into hiding. Kids become afraid to go to school. Parents avoid hospitals even when they need medical care. People withdraw from public life because they fear being targeted. This isn’t the kind of country I want to grow up in, and I don’t think it’s the kind of country most Americans want to live in either.
I’m asking for something simple: for Rhode Island to protect its residents by refusing to cooperate with harmful ICE practices and by adopting strong sanctuary policies. When people feel safe, they contribute more. When families are stable, communities thrive. When we choose compassion over fear, we all benefit.
I may only be 16, but I believe young people have a responsibility to speak up when something is wrong. And right now, what’s happening to immigrant families in Rhode Island — and across the United States — is wrong.
I’m asking Americans everywhere to stand with me. Please sign this petition and help push Rhode Island to take a stand for dignity, safety, and unity. Together, we can show the country what it looks like when a community chooses humanity over fear. https://www.change.org/ICEOUTOFRI
