“Turtling Up”
just asked her community, “The Build Lab” what members do in a certain situation and shared that her mom called what she does, “Turtling Up”
Such a great name for this and I was inspired by her question to share what I do and also led to me sharing what I did over the weekend …
All of it together felt like WAY more than needed to be in my little comment, so I came here to share my weekend project:
I switched up three big areas of my home and have been organizing all the chaos that erupted since Sunday and it feels AWESOME!!
I’ll take pictures when I’m done but in a nutshell, our dream is to tear down our house and build new but if we can wait a few years it might make sense to subdivide in order to get some extra money to help with building costs.
So I don’t want to spend more than I absolutely need to in order to make our home cozy again after waiting six years for permission to subdivide and then having the housing market be in the dumps….
We could be spending a LOT to renovate/paint something that will hopefully be torn down in a couple years.
But since I’ve decided we’re no longer going to live like we are dirt poor with paint chipping and gouges out of walls, cupboard doors falling because I don’t want to spend any time, effort or money while we’re in limbo, I jumped into this project with just a tape measure and some vague ideas!
After my hubby and two youngest kids left for church on Sunday, I asked my 19 year old son to help me figure out if we could switch a built in bookcase from my daughter’s room into the Master bedroom and give her our full size beautiful bookcase from our room cause she didn’t like the built ins and I wanted the extra shelving space for organizing my stuff.
Since one of our big office desks has been sitting essentially unused except for filing documents and being resting place for clothes that have been worn but are not yet ready for laundry, I decided that to switch my rectangular office desk with this bigger “L” shaped desk.
I was thinking I’d put my computer and printer in what is becoming my sitting/craft room but decided I hated them there cause that room is at the front of our house with a beautiful big window that I love opening and sitting by….
Decided that was actually not a great space for a computer table as that would make for a very simple smash and grab opportunity for both computer and printer which meant reclaiming my office (which I had told hubby he could use for a room for him) and doing some more organizing and switcheroos moves in there so that it is perfect now with my desk, a chair for hubby to relax in AND our weights plus weight bench - that last part sounds weird but actually makes me very happy since we have no where else to put it and the way the office is laid out now means that it will actually get used and be out of the way when I’m working!!
It’s felt incredibly exhilarating to me to organize one piece at a time without a plan other than a tape measure and an idea!!!
That is my JAM!
But the chaos that ensued was a teensy bit overwhelming for my hubby as I had five rooms in an uproar all at once while I figured out what was going to work best…
Had to change a few things after I had already made a decision on, my feet were aching incredibly at the end of each day, but it’s taken me just two days to get to the point where his spaces are calm and peaceful with just a little bit of decorating and final organization to go!
The main areas that need work are my spaces and they’re tidy enough to not overwhelm or hidden behind a door.
AND I cleared space in my freezer to accept 70 pounds of meaty beef bones for bone broth on Monday!!
Today I’m gonna make summer squash bread (substituting patty pan squash for zucchini) and 3 batches of meatballs!
Switching things up is also a key for me!
Sunday is when Holy Spirit whispered, “today is the day!” and I started my switcheroo project with my 19 yo son’s help…. That is something that feels like a huge breath of fresh air because it’s not a day I would normally feel inspired or even consider a huge home project, but I’m very confident that it was the Lord’s prompting.
Monday I focused on chopping and sauteeing veggies and making space in my freezer then bagging the bones when my oldest son brought them to me (so awesome to have a butcher working in a big butcher company that I trust to buy meat from!)
Tuesday I organized the office and our master bedroom.
Today I slept in, am on a walk now and will start the bread and make meatballs when I get home.
It’s been a great week and I’m super excited about my new office layout and that my sitting/crafting room is almost ready for me to paint a sky scene on the wall I use as a background for my month brand photos!!
AND the peace that will come once everything is done as it all makes SO much more sense now and gives me a few different spaces for what was all crammed into one area before is going to make the chaos of just a few days worth it!!
