The Old Ways of childbirth 🙏
Childbirth in the old ways was not a hospital event. it was something that happened at home, surrounded by women, herbs, prayer, fear, and hope. In Anglo-Saxon and medieval England, the village midwife was one of the most respected people in the community. She carried generations of knowledge: 🌿 herbs 🔥 warming remedies 🕯 protective charms 🙏 prayers and blessings Men were usually kept outside while mothers, neighbours, and wise women guided the birth. But childbirth was also dangerous. Many women and infants did not survive. Because of this, birth carried deep spiritual meaning. People believed fate, God, luck, and unseen forces could all influence the outcome. After birth, mothers were cared for beside the fire with warm broths, rest, and herbal healing while the community helped support the household. Modern life is safer. But perhaps something was lost too: the closeness of community 👩❤️👨 shared wisdom 🩺 and care between generations. 🧑🧑🧒🧒 What part of the old ways do you think modern society has forgotten most?
