Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av - Hear
Tonight is known as Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av. This Shabbat is special because it coincides with the beginning of the Hebrew month of Av and has specific Torah and Haftarah readings associated with it. The Torah portion for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av 2025 is Matot-Masei (Numbers 30:2-36:13), according to Chabad. The special Haftarah reading is a combination of verses from Jeremiah and Isaiah, relating to the themes of destruction and consolation associated with the month of Av. It is also the day that Aaron, the first High Priest, passed away.
Av is a month of HEARING. As the previous month of Tammuz was a month of seeing represented by the tribe of Reuben this month is a month of hearing represented by the tribe of Simeon.
Let us learn from the Shema (Simeon’s name comes from Shema which means hear), “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD [is] one! You shall love the LORD your God with ALL YOUR HEART, with ALL YOUR SOUL, and with ALL YOUR STRENGTH. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” ~ Deut 6:4-9 (FYI: this is the scripture that is inside the mezuzahs on the doors of Jewish homes.)
To Hear in Hebrew means to perceive, understand, discern, distinguish, to obtain knowledge; TO FULLY COMPREHEND IN THE HEART AND NOT ONLY TO UNDERSTAND WITH THE MIND. It also means to Summon – to take Action. God’s children do not just stand like posts with ears, but become active in doing the will of Him that speaketh.
In Job 12:11 and 34:3 it says the “ear discerns words”. When we have developed a sense of hearing both in the natural and spiritual, we gain the ability to discern and distinguish truth from falsehood.
This is also another reminder of the greatest commandment to LOVE God with all your heart, soul and strength and to love others. Out of love for God births love for ourselves which then gives us the capacity to love others. Lay everything before your loving father (Ab/Av) in this season. Let Him uproot things that need to be removed from your life. If it seems like all these old wounds and pains are coming up this season, it is because God is wanting to get to the root of these things and remove them so we can enter into the New Year (Rosh Hashanah 9/22/25) without them.
Things are about to change drastically in the season that is upon us, so deal with all those things you have been putting aside for a later date, that date is NOW. God is setting us on new paths and we have to be willing to change our ways and, in some cases, direction, in order to walk in the NEW He has for us! This three-week period (Bein Hametzarim/Dire Straits) is very strategic in getting our footing down so that we can walk in alignment and move forward in power with the seven-fold spirit of God on that proper road.
In the month of Av, we reach one of the lowest points in Tisha b’Av (9th of Av-8/2-8/3/25)), which represents a descending, but in Tu b’Av (15th of Av) we ascend and reach one of the highest points. Tu b’Av (8/8-8/9/25) is a full moon holiday filled with dancing and feasting. It is one of the most joyous times in the calendar. This time represents life rising out of death, union rising out of brokenness, planting rising out of harvest. While no marriages were performed during the time of Bein Hametzarim, Tu b’Av is a time when the men come to the festival looking to choose their wives. It is said from Tu b’Av on Her mourning turns to dancing.
On Tu B’Av, which also falls on Shabbat Nachmu (Shabbat of Consolation), starts what is known as Shiva Denechemta. This refers to the seven special Torah readings, that are read between Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah. These readings are meant to offer consolation and comfort to the Jewish people after the solemn period of mourning for the destruction of the Temples (Tisha B'Av). These 7 weeks are also known as the “Seven Steps to Healing.” In these 7 weeks don’t let anything hold you back from what God has for you.
We must learn to HEAR again. We must learn from Simeon who listened to the evil report from the spies, who went into the land while the Israelites were in the wilderness instead of the good report from Joshua and Caleb. He also did not listen when his sister Dinah asked him not to take revenge for her rape. Simeon and Levi went and slew all the males in the whole town. It took Simeon a long time to learn how to HEAR – to discern rightly.
Let’s not miss our opportunity this season to HEAR. You have been going through things this season so that you can be ready for what is coming. Av is a month of transition, reminding us to take care of our hearts and spirits as we walk through changes in our lives.
Heart and mind coherence is extremely important during this season. Spend extra time meditating and seeking the Lord to open up your heart to Hear. Our hearts actually have more neurons than our brains. We have to learn how to hear from our hearts and from the heart of God and not from our feeble human minds. And notice how the word HEART is the word HEAR with a CROSS at the end!
Any kind of shadow work or inner child healing mediations are great during this season. In addition, it is a time for Heart and Mind Coherence, here is one of my favorite meditations for that:
