[Daily Impact] Your Success “Hinges” Upon These 5 Principles...
Success — however one defines it and in whatever context — is always an inside job.
Indeed, it would seem very accurate to say that...
Key Point: While success *manifests* outwardly, it *begins* in the head and in the heart.
It begins with the decision to be the kind of person worthy of success and being willing to take the actions necessary to bring it about. Then it is a matter of discovering the how-tos.
Good News: There are lots of principles and strategies one can learn, tap into, and apply to create success, both personally and professionally. Many of these date back to antiquity and are derived from a number of different traditions and philosophies.
They are all very valuable and worthy of continuous study.
There are also books written by current authors who generously share their wisdom with us. While there’s “nothing new under the sun,” it’s wonderful how they apply universal principles of success to our modern times.
Two dear, long-time friends of mine — serial (and immensely successful) entrepreneurs Frank and Theresa AuCoin — wrote a book on financial success titled Ten Legacy Lessons of Wealth: What the Wealthy Teach Their Children That the Masses Don’t Know.
While filled with wisdom throughout, the couple highlights five principles that, in my opinion, ensure success for anyone who follows them faithfully.
The AuCoins call them “The 5 Hinges,” and they are as follows:
  • Hinge #1: Be Respectful
  • Hinge #2: Be on Time and Be Prepared
  • Hinge #3: Do What You Say You’re Going to Do
  • Hinge #4: Finish What You Start
  • Hinge #5: Say “Thank You” and “Please” (In That Order)
Don’t those five just make total sense — especially when we consider that success is so often the result of the relationships we build and the “know, like, and trust” we inspire in others?
Suggestion: Pick up Frank and Theresa AuCoin’s book, study it, and share the principles with your children and team members.
Today’s Exercise: Go through each of “The Five Hinges” and come up with your own thoughts regarding what they really mean and how you can apply them. You might even think back on times you did not follow those principles and how that worked out, as well as those times when you did, and how *that* worked out. (Hint: Then do more of that.) ;-)
