Describing a situation where I had to pivot my approach after facing an unexpected challenge
S: I was working with a medically complex patient who was highly motivated to get out of be and sit up in her wheelchair. The patient had multiple medical issues, but her desire to be more independent was clear. After transferring her into the chair, she experienced a syncopal episode shortly afterward.
T: My immediate goal was to respond quickly and safely to the syncopal episode, ensuring the patient's safety and coordinating with the healthcare team to get her the necessary care.
A: As soon as the patient became symptomatic, I immediately called for assistance to help transfer patient back to bed, ensuring that we minimized the risk of injury during the process. Once the patient was safely back in bed, I ensured her vital signs were checked and I communicated all relevant information to the Rapid Response Team.
R: The team effort allowed for a swift, coordinated response, preventing any injury or further complications for the patient.
T: This experience reinforced my ability to stay composed under pressure, adjust my treatment plan in real-time, and respond quickly in a medical emergency. It also demonstrated the importance of collaboration and clear communication with the healthcare team to ensure the best outcome for the patient.
