Cult Like?
💥Trigger warning
There are some patterns that have been repeated for generations in certain communities that, if we’re being honest, carry cult-like qualities—but go completely unrecognized because they’re so deeply embedded in “how we do life.”
And I get it—most of it wasn’t birthed from evil intent. It came from a desire for safety, tradition, structure, and belonging.
What the shift looks like:
🔒 No permission to question leadership.
If disagreeing means you’re “rebellious” or “out of order,” you’re not in a healthy culture — you’re in a controlled one.
👥 Isolation from ‘outsiders’.
You’re taught to fear “the world” or anything different. Other perspectives are painted as dangerous — not discerned, but dismissed as evil or “Not of God”.
📖 Scripture Spiritualized as behavior control.
Used out of context to shame, guilt, or silence. The Word becomes a cage instead of a compass.
🫢 Secrets, silence, and image management.
Everything’s about what it looks like, not what it feels like. Abuse gets hidden. Pain gets spiritualized. Authenticity is QUIETLY punished.
⛓️ Identity suppression.
Your calling is only valid if it fits their mold. Uniqueness is “too much.” Passion is “pride.”
Then the acceptance of judgement is justified😳.
🌪️ Gossip, fear, and assumptions swirl.
When people “talk”, when assumptions replace actual conversations, and when fear gets fed…
It spirals like a tornado. Picking up speed and damaging everything in its path.
Often, the people caught in the middle never even get a voice.
🛑 It’s time to stop the cycle.
I’ve walked with hundreds of people through this.
I’ve sat in the tension between the CONTROL that comes from FEAR and LOVE which brings LIFE and CONNECTION.
And I’ve watched the fruit of true freedom emerge when people wake up — without having to burn it all down… or split off.
Discernment isn’t dishonor.
Questions aren’t rebellion.
Healing starts with awareness…. And bridges the gap with communication.
We are all worthy of Communities that are safe, life giving and full great relationships!
