Yes be yes and no be no
Posted this on Facebook and wanted insights on here too. I've been thinking a lot about this verse. What do you understand it to mean? In context it seems to go with promising with an oath. Instead of saying yes I'll do it , saying I promise x,w and z. There is power in our words and I'm learning the less I say sometimes the better vs overexplaining. I have a statement my Spanish teacher told us that in a way kind of applies. She taught us in Spanish to say yes or no to plans. But she told us just say no or yes. Don't say no, because I have this going on. Our yes or no is the answer. Saying more can lead others to question our schedule or be upset if our plans change and they didnt know there was alternative plans already in the works. I think when we get stuck in people pleasing we think the kind thing to do if we are aren't going to say yes is leave it as a maybe to not hurt them . But it doesn't do anyone favors. We arent being truly honest if we know our answer is going to be the opposite. Also why do we sometimes make people change their no to yes - do you want help with this? And they say no and we can sometimes ask several times and then the answer changes. Then we aren't allowing them to have a yes or no. Just mulling this over. Interested to hear your thoughts on this. Definitely a growing point for me.

This is really good. Something I have been working on. I have come to realize when my daughter hears me say maybe she thinks it’s a yes. I also recognized recently that my Dad never said yes to anything. Instead it was maybe, I reckon, sure or we will see. Although he did not have a problem saying no, but it always came with something else. For instance. If I wanted something he would say, “want in one hand and s*** in the other and see which one fills up faster.” In my experience I have been too quick at times to say yes. Purr of pleasing others, but not saying no and being clear with it. Thank you for bringing this up. It is definitely an area I still need to work on as well.
