The Ultimate Hack for Lead Walking Training ๐Ÿฆฎ
When I was a teenager I struggled to teach my Labrador to walk nicely on a lead. I felt like I tried every method.
Eventually I would just get frustrated, yank at the lead, tell him off and feel bad about it... but nothing worked. He'd just keep pulling.
Now I have taught my last two dogs lead walking with minimal effort.
Maybe a few minutes a couple times a week over a few months?
Most people make the same mistake.
They persevere with lead walking training for as long as they can tolerate it and then eventually get fed up and let the dog pull the rest of the way. This undoes any work they put in and the cycle continues.
The solution is super, super easy.
Different equipment. One piece of equipment = training, the other = casual, no training.
For example; walking on the collar = walk nicely, harness = casual, I don't care if you pull.
This means you can have your cake and eat it. You can practice a few minutes each day, switch back to the casual equipment and not undo all your progress.
And no, despite how mad about it people get the equipment doesn't really matter that much. Use whatever equipment you want for lead walking vs casual. Just be 100% consistent, or it will be meaningless.
Eventually you will be able to switch over to the 'lead walking' equipment permanently and your job is done.
