Interpretable Context Search
I believe ICM accidentally revealed a new database architecture for AI agents. It's a game changer.
I'm calling it:
  • ICDB — Interpretable Context Database
  • ICS — Interpretable Context Search
The key insight:
Agents don't just need to retrieve information. They need to know where information belongs and what context applies to it.
Traditional databases solve parts of this:
  • Relational DBs structure data.
  • Vector DBs retrieve by semantic similarity.
  • Graph DBs model relationships.
But agents have another problem: Context routing.
ICM already gives us the primitives:
→ Folders define scope
→ Paths carry meaning
→ "CONTEXT.md" defines contracts
→ Entry files route queries
→ Frontmatter provides structured metadata
→ Links define relationships
→ Files hold state
→ Git can preserve history
Put those together and the filesystem stops being "just files". It becomes an Interpretable Context Database.
...
ICDB
...
The important property of ICDB is that location carries meaning.
The database structure itself tells the agent:
→ What information exists
→ Where it belongs
→ What rules apply to it
→ What context should be loaded
→ What other information it relates to
And humans can inspect the exact same structure. No opaque index required to understand how the knowledge is organized.
This also gives us deterministic writes. LLMs are probabilistic. Storage doesn't have to be.
→ Probabilistic interpretation
→ Deterministic routing
→ Deterministic validation
→ Deterministic storage
→ Deterministic checks
The LLM interprets messy reality. The ICDB decides where that interpretation belongs.
...
ICS
...
Then I realized the same architecture changes search.
  • Vector search asks: "What stored information is semantically similar to this query?"
  • Interpretable Context Search asks: "Where would the answer to this question live?"
That's a massive difference.
Instead of searching the entire semantic space first:
Query
→ Interpret intent
→ Route through known structure
→ Load relevant context
→ Search the bounded space
→ Return answer + sources
The LLM already understands semantics. ICS uses that intelligence to navigate the database before retrieving everything. This means retrieval itself becomes interpretable.
If the system retrieves the wrong information, you can inspect:
→ How it interpreted the query
→ Where it routed
→ What context it loaded
→ What sources it used
Retrieval becomes debuggable.
This doesn't kill SQL or vector search This is the part I find most interesting. ICDB doesn't need to replace other databases. It can route to them.
ICM can tell the agent:
  • "This information lives in files."
  • "This requires SQL."
  • "This branch needs semantic search."
  • "This data comes from an API."
So vector search becomes a retrieval tool inside the context architecture, instead of being the context architecture.
You could route to the relevant domain first and only then run vector search over that bounded space.
  • Same with SQL.
  • Same with APIs.
  • Same with graph traversal when actually needed.
...
Git makes this even crazier
...
If ICDB state is files, every accepted write can become a Git commit.
Now the database gets:
→ History
→ Diffs
→ Rollback
→ Attribution
→ Previous known-good states
→ Exact change inspection
An agent detects something wrong?
It can inspect what changed, identify when the bad state appeared, compare against the previous state, and propose a correction.
The database becomes interpretable across structure AND time.
...
The bigger idea
...
I think agent databases need a property we haven't focused on enough: Context determinism.
  • Given a query: Can the agent reliably determine what context applies?
  • Given new information: Can it reliably determine where it belongs?
  • Given a change: Can we determine what it affects?
  • Given an error: Can we inspect how the database reached that state?
  • Given an answer: Can we inspect exactly what context produced it?
That's what I'm exploring with ICDB + ICS.
  • ICDB makes context addressable.
  • ICS makes context searchable.
Together:
  • Probabilistic interpretation.
  • Deterministic routing.
  • Deterministic storage.
  • Interpretable retrieval.
  • Auditable history.
...
Conclusion
...
  • Vector DBs made semantic similarity searchable.
  • Relational DBs made structured data queryable.
  • ICDB makes context itself addressable and interpretable.
I think that's much closer to what AI agents actually need.
