Today we talked about vaping — but much of the conversation applies to any long-standing habit you’re trying to break, whether that’s drinking, emotional eating, procrastinating, worrying or reacting. A few of the key things we chatted about: 👉Awareness comes first. 👉 A habit can feel incredibly convincing when you’re inside it: "I need this. I can’t resist this. This is particularly hard for me". 👉 Start by recognising the urge for what it is: a well-practiced, automated loop — not an instruction you have to follow. Get curious about what triggers the loop. 👉 Pay attention to both your: - Internal environment — stress, anxiety, sadness, boredom, loneliness, frustration, fatigue. - External environment — particular places, people, times of day, activities and situations where you automatically reach for the vape. The more clearly you can see the conditions surrounding the habit, the more opportunities you have to interrupt it. 👉 Make the old habit harder and the new habits easier Environment matters enormously. If you're trying to stop vaping, don't keep your vape within easy reach. Create friction. Make yourself work harder to access the behaviour you're trying to leave behind. And do the reverse with the behaviour you're trying to habituate. Keep your Clarity Botanical Inhaler easy to reach. 🗣️ We've had some lovely feedback recently about how helpful people are finding it to Breathe with Claridi during moments of anxiety and impulse. This is exactly where it can support habit change. When the urge arrives, reach for Clarity instead. Breathe slowly with it, interrupt autopilot, allow the urge to peak and pass, and give yourself time to choose what you do next. 👀 Watch the story you tell yourself about the habit. If you continually tell yourself this is so hard for me, I'm really hooked, I've tried before and couldn't do it, you keep reinforcing the belief that the habit has more power than you do. Try something more useful: I notice the urge. It's familiar because I've repeated this behaviour many times. I don't have to act on it.
