👋 Who Should Make the First Move?
You join a new community.
What happens next?
In some communities, you make the first move.
You're encouraged to create an introduction post, tell everyone who you are, what you do, and why you joined.
In others, the community makes the first move.
The owner welcomes you personally—or includes you in a group welcome post—and existing members jump in to say hello.
And some communities do both.
I've been thinking about which approach actually makes a new member feel more welcome.
Because joining a new community can feel a little like walking into a room where everyone already knows each other.
Should the new person have to introduce themselves first?
Or should someone in the room walk over and say...
"Hey, glad you're here. Come meet everyone." 👋
Whether you own a community or simply belong to a few, I'm curious:
Which approach do YOU prefer?
Ⓐ Let me introduce myself
Ⓑ Welcome me personally
Ⓒ Welcome new members as a group
Ⓓ Do both
Ⓔ I usually skip the introductions altogether
👇 Tell us why in the comments.
Then reply to two other people and compare experiences.
Community owners might pick up a few onboarding ideas directly from the people they're trying to welcome. 👀
