Hey Leaders,
This week’s TED Talk Tuesday, “Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe” by Simon Sinek takes a hard look at what leadership really is — and what it isn’t.
Simon Sinek reminds us that leadership isn’t about authority, titles, or being in charge. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe, valued, and supported — especially when things get hard.
He talks about the idea of the Circle of Safety: when leaders protect their people from internal politics, fear, and blame, teams perform better, trust more deeply, and stay committed longer. When leaders don’t do this, people protect themselves instead of the mission.
Here’s the part that really stands out to me:
Leaders don’t earn trust by being perfect. They earn trust by putting people first.
As leaders and mentors, the question we have to ask ourselves is simple — but not easy:
Do the people around me feel safe to speak up, fail, and grow?
Because when people feel safe, they show up differently. They take ownership. They support one another. And they lead others the same way.
Take a few minutes to watch this talk and reflect on how you’re creating safety — or where you may need to strengthen it.
When leaders commit to protecting people, we build better people… and that’s how we create a better world.
