Book Feature Friday: Week 2: Level 1: Position (People Follow Because They Have To) - The 5 Levels of Leadership by John Maxwell
Hey Leaders,
Let’s talk about Level 1: Position.
This is where most leadership journeys start.
At this level, people follow you because… they have to.
You’ve got the title. You’ve got the authority. But that’s about it.
And here’s the truth:
Position gives you a chance.
It does not make you a leader.
If all you rely on is your title, people will give you compliance—but not commitment.
They’ll do just enough to get by. But they won’t give you their best.
Great leaders don’t stay at Level 1. They grow beyond it.
Discussion
1️⃣ Have you ever worked for a “title-only” leader? What was that like?
2️⃣ Why is position alone not enough?
3️⃣ What’s the risk of staying at Level 1?
Leadership Challenge
This week, focus on building relationships—not just authority.
