My volume wasn’t loud at all, but when Omnisphere suddenly crashed while playing a melody in my project, it caused a massive volume spike.
For those who may not know, this can be extremely dangerous for both your ears and your gear. Make sure to have a safety limiter on your master bus to prevent unexpected volume surges!
To set up a safety limiter in Cubase Pro 13 to prevent volume spikes from a crashing VST.
Here’s how you can do it:
1. Use a Brickwall Limiter on the Master Bus
Cubase comes with Brickwall Limiter and Maximizer, which you can place on your master output to prevent sudden volume spikes.
- Open the MixConsole (F3).
- Insert Brickwall Limiter as the last plugin on your Stereo Out (Master Bus).
- Set the Ceiling to -0.1 dB or slightly lower.
- Keep Release relatively fast to react quickly to spikes.
This ensures that no signal exceeds the threshold and protects your ears and equipment.
I'm sure there is a similar setup in other DAWs.
