What’s one thing you wish you knew before publishing your first book?
I’ve been thinking about how much of self-publishing happens after the book is finished. Writing the book is one thing, but getting the right people to actually discover it is a completely different challenge. For those of you who have already published, what’s one thing you learned about marketing, visibility, reviews, Amazon, social media, or getting readers that you wish you had known before launching? I’d be interested to hear what actually worked for you and what turned out to be a waste of time or money.

@Joe Tyndall Happy new month, Joe! 🎉 Printed copies arriving on Friday and a signing at Barnes & Noble the next day is quite a turnaround. With the third book nearly done and a store and library tour coming, your plate is full. Since time is the bottleneck, I'm happy to take the trailer off your hands. I could put together a short one for Perfect Keto or Our Universe, and you'd only need to approve it. No pressure at all, and enjoy the tour! 📚

@Hank Quense That's awesome, Hank! With your background that makes total sense. How do you usually use them once they're done — Amazon, your website, or somewhere else?
How much have you spent on your book so far?
Editing, design, ads, coaching, all of it together. Hoping this might be helpful to set expectations for new authors who join. If there was anything you wish you didn't spend money on or that you should have, feel free to mention that in the comments!

@Tommy` Boyd Congrats on 85 copies in under 90 days, that's a strong start! I saw you just added the audiobook. How did you make it, did you narrate it yourself or use an AI voice?

@Tommy` Boyd Happy new month, Tommy! 🎉 Hiring a pro narrator through ACX is a solid choice. And a podcast in the works is exciting! Are you planning to launch it on YouTube, or go straight to the podcast platforms? And do you already have a format in mind, like solo episodes or interviews?
Tommy here!!👋
Hi everyone! I'm Tommy, founder of Rayol Ops. My agency offers AI book trailers and audio versions for authors, and I also love writing, so this feels like the right place to be. I'm here to learn from people who are doing the hard work of getting their books out. For those of you who have already published, what's been the hardest part of getting your book in front of readers?

@Joe Tyndall Happy new month, Joe! 🎉 That feeling of being overwhelmed and pulled in different directions by paid services is real, so having a clear system like the Author Launch Kit makes a big difference. What's one thing from Julie's approach that clicked for you the most?
Influencer Marketing - Is it worth paying for?
There was a great post from an author that spent $44,000 on a book launch and what worked and didn't work, and she shared that influencer marketing was maybe not the best investment. That story combined with an audit of our Amazon Ads performance over the last five years inspired me to share this video. Have you paid an influencer for book promotion? How'd it go?

@Christopher Reeves @Christopher Reeves That's such a common story unfortunately — a lot of people make a living selling hope to authors rather than actual results. The strategies that actually work seem to always come back to consistency and owning your own audience. What's been your focus lately when it comes to marketing?

@Ted McLyman Ted McLyman 100% agree — writing the book is almost the easy part once you realize what comes after. That point about only you caring about your book at first really hits. It takes a while to build the kind of momentum where readers start doing some of that work for you. What genre do you write in?

@Rob Cole That's a smart move, Rob — professors carry real weight when it comes to library adoption, especially now that the semester's back in swing. Would love to hear how the outreach goes once you start getting responses!
