Group gtg or hunt
@Grant Richardson feel free to remove this if it's not quite relevant yet. Hunting seasons are almost here, I think California and Florida have deer seasons opening in the next 10-14 days. Then bear and pronghorn seasons kick off and the fall 2025 season will be full steam ahead. Hopefully some folks have managed to meet from the group already, but it sure would be fun to meet some of you folks myself. Maybe a plan for a spring bear hunt/camp or hog hunt would be the perfect scenario for folks to meet up. I'm a Compton and a PBS member, but it looks like all the hunts scheduled are full up this year. I goofed and didn't put in for any draws this year, being responsible can be a pain, so I'm planning on hunting my home state the first couple weeks of September, unless I score a last minute elk tag somewhere then I'll spend that time in pursuit of elk.
👋 Hey Guys!...Let's Take The Time To Introduce Ourselves...
My name is Jenn Richardson, my husband, Grant Richardson and I created this group, TradBowhunter - Ethical Predator. We are from Ontario, Canada, I have had a love for the outdoors since I was little. My grandfather being a conservation officer in the United States and my other grandfather a trapper here in Ontario. I have been in Law Enforcement for over 26yrs, love the outdoors, marketing and business so decided to put all three together! This is a passion piece for Grant and I...My hubby being the subject matter expert with Traditional Bowhunting as well as an author, podcast host and 3rd generation traditional bowhunter. We wanted to bring like minded people together and create a place to share their experiences with traditional bowhunting. ----------------- Hey folks! Grant Richardson here - about myself... I was raised in a hunting family. I have Bowhunted with traditional gear all my life and started shooting bows when I was 3. I've been able to hunt all over North America and along the way this past 40 plus years hunting with trad gear I have learned that success is born not from tech or the latest camo but from long cold days in the woods and often- failure. Bows and arrows were always a part of my life and I was lucky to have an upbringing that emphasized time in the woods. I was able to see both the rise of Bowhunting in Ontario and the laws and regulations based on ethics & conservation formed- But - also to see them fall apart to an Industry that focused on the latest and newest tech or gadgets to bring wild game home and not the skillsets I was raised to respect and follow. The very fabric of those primitive weapon/Bowhunting seasons was based on the fact that it was harder to take game with a bow and arrow- simply that it was difficult- but there is the truth that many forgot or perhaps never learned. The Ethical Predator was created from those lessons learned all my life. I helped create this community seeing a need to bring folks from all over the world into a community that supported the old ways, from scouting, tracking & the heritage of Bowhunting I grew up with.

I go by Steve, for obvious reasons. I think I was 7 or 8 when I first started hunting. Dad worked a lot, thought heading out west was a rich man's game. Sure wish he had asked a few of his friends back then how they did it on the same budget, instead we started racing 1/4 midgets and only hunting the Illinois firearm season until we got out of racing. I was 13 when we quit racing, bought compounds and hunted a little more. I practiced every day for hours. Got so familiar with my bow I was shooting the end of coke cans at 45 yards. I should mention I grew up with Sally Wunderle and her brother Vic was also a great friend, I shot with both of them and would often razz them about just shooting their bow instead of constantly tweaking with stuff. Obviously I was focused on hunting and figured a 2 1/2" group at 45 yards and 6 arrows touching at 30 would be sufficient for a whitetail at 20. Grew up, chased girls, joined the USAF, got married (21 years strong), rejoined the civilian job market, rediscovered hunting soon after marriage. Living outside St Louis and having zero clue about public land I practiced a lot, asked for permission often, hunted very little. Then we landed in Nebraska by way of Virginia and I discovered public land. Hunted 2015 on family ground, shot a small buck, lost access due to a family dispute, committed to only hunting public land and gave the wheel bow one last season while deciding what recurve I wanted. 2017 I offloaded the compound for a rimfire and hunted with an RER Vital I had Chester build for me. Took me until 2022 to put it together and shot a young doe. Started tinkering with building my own bows in 2021 but have yet to build one I like because they've all been someone else's design that I had either replicated or purchased plans for. Put building on the shelf for a bit while I figure out exactly what I want to build and use, and have been focusing on configuring my shop to foot and crest arrows. Long winded, but it adds context.
Ever get stuck in a cycle
I'm not one to be very committed to building points in the western states, but it looks as though I probably should. Every year I tell myself I'm going somewhere west of the Nebraska panhandle come September, and every year I end up staying in Nebraska. I plan very poorly, and then in the summer life hands us several new expenses we've anticipated for which leaves my trips on the back burner with no flame. I'd hoped to put in for the secondary draw in Colorado, but I missed that chance. Maybe I'll luck out and catch a leftover tag yet someplace. But, I for sure will be planning better for next year.

@Grant Richardson Nebraska has a few places where our mule deer and pronghorn populations need a break as well. I've been trying for several years to get enough folks to support those areas be placed in a restricted weapon season for 5 years. Just run a pilot program to prove people will still buy those tags while becoming more committed to getting close. It's always the same excuse, "all game and parks cares about is money". I haven't given up on my dream, but it sure isn't gaining much traction.

Who’s going to be attending the Compton Rendezvous in Michigan next week?

I had hoped to go but new role at work has me in training all month. Not certain if I'll head west to CTAS or east to Compton next year. Distance from Nebraska is close to the same.
What's your favorite bow
Who else is shooting a custom longbow? I got both of mine from a bowyer in Ontario. They're really awesome.

I've got a Black Widow PCHx and a CHx. Both 48 @ 28 that seem to have chosen me. I'm 6'1" and draw just short of 30" so a 62" should suit me better but I always end up grabbing my reliable old PCH a week before season because it just suits me.

@Grant Richardson indeed they are. I've got several other bows that are just as nice but they don't shoot the same for me.
