🔥 Why the Anthropic vs U.S. Government Story Matters to the AI Community
You may have seen a lot of discussion online about Anthropic, Claude, the U.S. government and OpenAI — and not all of it is clear or accurate. Here’s a concise summary of what’s been happening, why it’s significant, and a chance to hear your view. 📌 What triggered the dispute Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) demanded that Anthropic grant unrestricted access to its Claude AI for military use, including lawful purposes that could include domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons deployment. Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, refused, citing ethical guardrails the company has built into its AI — especially prohibitions on mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons without human oversight. When Anthropic stood firm, the Pentagon threatened to cancel a significant contract (≈ $200 million) and label the company a “supply chain risk.” Shortly thereafter, President Trump directed all U.S. federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s AI technology, citing national security concerns. Anthropic has publicly stated it plans to challenge the “supply chain risk” designation in court and maintain its ethical stance. CEO Amodei characterised his decision not to relent as compatible with defending democratic values — even if it means falling out with government authorities. Meanwhile, OpenAI struck a separate deal with the Pentagon to supply AI for classified military networks, which some commentators believe reflects a different approach to the same set of ethical red lines. 🤔 Why this matters for anyone using AI tools This isn’t just about military contracts — it highlights key tensions in our industry: 1. AI ethics vs. use case pressureCompanies are being pushed to bend their internal safety guardrails in the face of external expectations about how their AI should be used. The Anthropic standoff shows how far a company might go to stick to its principles — and the real consequences when it does. 2. Competition and positioningAnthropic is also promoting easier switching to Claude, even offering tools to import chat histories — part of a broader strategy to attract users amid the controversy.

In the US, we already ran across a similar issue as tax preparers. When DOGE accessed the IRS records, I personally felt like they were accessing files that I am bound by the IRS requirements to safeguard. When that data gets out there, I could be one of the companies that would be fined and sued. Other tax preparers thought I was crazy. I even called my liability insurance company and they thought I was crazy. That was a about a year ago. We need to put some legal architecture around all of this. How can we know who is at fault, if we haven't indicated that legally?
Smarter Statements
I've created a website that utilizes AI to review, analyze, and score financial statements, and explains them at a middle school level. This is a great tool for small business owners who do not understand financial jargon and for accountants as an add-on service for their clients. Here's the link: https://smarterstatements.com/ No charge to use. Just let me know 1. Do you think this is useful? 2. Is it something that you would offer your clients? Thanks again - if you run into any bugs, please let me know.

I have so many questions. Is this a demo site and everything hasn't been finished? I don't see the answer to the statements being secure. How are you securing their information. For that reason I wouldn't be having my clients use the website.
🚨 BIG NEWS from OpenAI – and it’s a game-changer for accountants
OpenAI has just released a brand-new AI model called GPT-OSS — and unlike most tools, this one is completely free, fully offline, and surprisingly powerful. 💡 So why does this matter to us as accountants? Here’s what makes this release a big deal: ✅ Total privacy – You can run this AI on your own machine, offline. That means no client data is sent to OpenAI, Microsoft, or any cloud provider. ✅ Zero ongoing costs – Once you’ve set it up, you can use it as much as you want with no monthly fees or API limits. ✅ Handles complex tasks – This model performs nearly as well as GPT-4 in areas like reasoning, logic, and even math — which is very promising for use in forecasting, advisory, internal planning, and more. ✅ No internet required – Great for those with patchy Wi-Fi or anyone who travels and wants a secure AI assistant on the go. Imagine having an AI assistant you fully control, with no data leakage risk and no subscription cost. This is now possible. ⚙️ You don’t need to be technical to take advantage of this — and you don’t need to start from scratch figuring it out... 👉 If you want to learn how to run LLMs locally, protect client data, and solve the AI privacy and security issue once and for all, I’ve just created brand-new training inside the AI Academy that walks you through everything step-by-step. 🔗 Join the AI Academy here: https://www.skool.com/ai-academy-3665/about Let me know in the comments what you are doing about privacy, security and client confidentiality when using AI. Is this something you are concerned about?

@John Johnstone I'm a MIcrosoft office. Would you feel confident allowing access to Sharepoint? I'm just not sure. Sharepoint is supposed to be secure according to their documentation but I just worry that you are giving access to all your clients' data if you hook it up to an AI platform. I haven't found anything to convince me yet. What about you?
