First Show
I've considered doing a Morning Show about this but I only have 3 hours. It would take me 3 months. So mine was 16 years old, Jane's Addiction with Mary's Danish opening at Eastern Washington University. I remember walking in to "Coming Down the Mountain" and seeing bodies flying in the air, everyone wearing black, just absolute MAYHEM and all I wanted to do was more of this! I stayed out the pit that day and just stood there in awe to be seeing and hearing the music from a band I loved. I was HOOKED. I think they played 30 minutes because Perry was a mess but I didn't know any better and in fact was shocked when I saw a band play longer! Also first show in Seattle? Pixies. Moore Theater.

There used to be a venue in Toronto called The Forum inside Ontario Place. Admission to The Forum was free with your Ontario Place admission. One summer my mom took my sister, my cousin and I to Ontario Place for the day and it just so happened that a Canadian band from Montreal called The Box was playing. So my mom decided to stay late enough to see them. We all had an awesome time and that was my gateway into concerts. You can't beat the energy at a live show.
Toronto radio history
For anyone who loves radio, the kind of music KEXP plays and knows Toronto, there’s a new documentary about CFNY that is now available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lmm50PHkU8c?si=vpmdOQzocKT1SrxK This is the sound of my youth. 😊 (and yes, Rush’s Spirit of Radio was inspired by CFNY)

Nice to see another person from the Toronto area on here. I loved the documentary. I grew up in Brampton, so there's hometown pride in CFNY. Unfortunately for the production team, they had to shave it down to 1 hr for TVO Docs to pick it up. Apparently Ivar Hamilton amd Scot Turner are exploring having screenings of the full version. I'm hoping they do and plan to see it. I also see so many parallels between KEXP and the Spirit of Radio days. So good to have that on the air again.

Great 2026 Debut Albums
This week a new Manchester band called Shaking Hand dropped their self titled debut album. I think it's the first great debut of 2026. Has anyone heard any other great debut albums yet?

The song you weren't ready for
So, I have songs and albums that are slow burners. I know you know. You almost get mad at yourself for not loving it from the go. I liked OK Computer at first and well, it's near the top of my all timers now. I do this on the show as well. I love it actually as I can hear from listeners who are also "getting it" along with me. Is there a song from this past year that didn’t land at first—but later found you when you were ready? Those are often the ones that last.

I have been a fan of Black Country, New Road since the first album. When Forever, Howlong was released, I liked it, but it didn't grab me like the first 2 albums. However, when I saw them play For the Cold Country on the KEXP live session, that performance changed how I heard the album. The vocal performance live is incredible. And the album has really clicked and I appreciate it so much more now.
Listening Habits
Curious how people are actually listening right now. I play music for people in a room, in a box, sometimes in my own home. When you put on new music, are you Walking? Driving? Cooking? Lying on the floor?? At work with one earbud in. There’s no wrong answer. Just interested in the habits.

I love to experience new music on headphones as I feel like there's more connection. Sometimes, I'll put it on in my home office and if something grabs me, I'll spend some time with it on headphones later to hear more of the subtleties.

I'm from the Toronto area in Ontario Canada. I've been a music fanatic for as long as I can remember.
