When fast breathing isn’t an option
Hey everyone, I’ve been working with the recorded breathing practice, and honestly, the pace feels way too fast for me. Even when I really push myself past what feels okay, I can only manage about half the suggested speed. When I try to keep up, my limbs start tingling and going numb, like I’m not getting enough air. Slow, deep breathing has always been my way of staying grounded. That became even more important after a time when basic movement, because of chronic pain, would make my heart race. A doctor dismissed what I was going through and blamed it on “inactivity” instead of listening. Since then, I’ve instinctively learned to keep my system calm, even during high-intensity exercise. I also have a nasal injury that physically makes fast breathing harder. All of this makes me wonder: How much of this is just my body? And how much is connected to trauma, masking, or being autistic? More broadly, how do we shape these practices to actually meet us, instead of feeling like we have to force our bodies into a certain rhythm? I’d love to hear from you: - Have you needed to slow the practice down? - How do you adjust it to meet your own pace and limits? - What helps you know when to push and when to pause? Thanks so much for sharing, if you feel like it.

@Debbie Brousseau Wow Debbie, your response truly moved me. Thank you so much for sharing your story and presence. It’s such a gift to hear from someone with your lived wisdom and experience. I’ll definitely hold on to your words about listening to the body and finding strength through ease. Wishing you continued joy and well-being. P.S. Just to let you know, since your comment was a direct response to my post, I did receive it right away, even without the tag! But mentioning folks can be really helpful when replying in a thread or a different context, especially to make sure they don’t miss it. Just thought I’d share that in case it helps with navigating the app more easily. Big thanks again, and much love from Arizona❤️🥰

@Tasha Hedding such a precious reflection, Tasha. I really relate to what you shared. I feel that reading Adam’s note again might help ease our minds a little before tomorrow. And like you mentioned, part of the purpose of doing the breathwork this way is to help the mind connect with the body and become more present; to create a moment of relief and space to feel what’s already here. By noticing the emotions that are stuck and gently allowing them to surface, we can begin to acknowledge, respond to, and eventually release them. Making room for a deeper sense of ease in both body and mind.
Day 3
Good evening beautiful souls! I have been feeling so much more in control of my emotions since I came here and started doing the daily practice 3 days ago. It’s wild to me that just 7 minutes a day of this breathing practice can cause such a major shift in my life. I’m happier, more patient, more loving, and have much more energy throughout the day. A few things I have noticed while doing the practice, are that my throat gets really dry and kind of scratchy, I feel the need to swallow a lot (especially in the first half), and I yawn a lot during the second half. Has anyone else experienced these sensations and how do you navigate it in the moment?

My main issue was not being able to feel a big part of my body at first, then it turned into tingling and numbness. I just couldn’t keep up with the breathing pace in the beginning.

@Nadeem Al-Hasan Thank you so much, Nadeem. It’s really lovely to hear that Arizona has been home for both you and Jagger. It makes me feel even more connected to this space. I truly appreciate the warm welcome and am deeply grateful to you both for creating and offering such meaningful and powerful work. I’ve already shared the workshop with other mind-body medicine facilitators, and some Farsi-speaking facilitators were genuinely excited about it. Unfortunately, the language barrier has been a challenge for them. It made me wonder if you’ve ever considered offering the training in Farsi. I’d love to help make it more accessible for Farsi speakers, many of whom are living in traumatic situations and could benefit so much from this work. If it feels aligned, I’d be honored to support translating and sharing parts of the workshop content in Farsi. Really looking forward to Day One with all of you.
