Brakes
General question for you guys. On your normal everyday daily drivers who are you using for brakes and rotors. Full disclosure, I've been using carquest for quite a while. However, the last three four jobs I've had I've been running into their cradle clips not being very good fits and it's happened a few times lately. The stamping just seems wrong. I had to get O'Reilly's recently because I couldn't get the pads in stock at carquest that I wanted and I noticed that their clips were actually very spot on. Just wondering everyone's thoughts on that. I guess I'm wondering if anybody else has noticed this and what everybody else is using. I will also be honest, I don't always love O'Reilly's for these parts because the way they do their packaging is not much of a discount at the end of the day which is why I don't go that road.

@Ben Dellaria I do the same when I have to. It's just the OCD part of me that it drives me nuts what I have to lol

@Ben Dellaria I do the same thing. Anything that needs to be torqued I just think about it and I go back several times to double check. When it comes to torquing anything the two things that keeps me up at night and I wonder did I do this? Our oil drain plugs and lug nuts
Payments
My payment method is cash or card. I have allot of senior citizens that don’t have cards they have checks. Does anyone else take checks? I would rather not take a check but I have no choice sometimes.

@Bruce Oliver it's not quite the same stores like Walmart use a slightly different system when they process it. Essentially they use the account number to transfer it as a debit conversion and then they're able to see if the funds are there. The bank does not do that. They just get the digital image and they send it to the other bank. Usually next day a certain portion of that check is available but it's not always a guarantee. You could still find out a few days down the road that there was no money in that account and then you get hit with return check fee. Walmart and the banks. Although they use an electronic system, they are two different electronic systems

@Bruce Oliver maybe I just need a new bank LOL. I just put in a check from a job last night and what happens for me is the check was roughly 800. So $250 of it is posted today but the rest is on hold until I guess whenever they say it's good

Having trouble charging the right amount for jobs
I have all data I invested in that so I know the labor times for the job. I just don’t know how to go about charging proper. I don’t wanna be too cheap and I don’t wanna be too expensive but I don’t wanna leave too much on the table.

@Joel Adams I agree with you on times. I use Mitchell pro demand and there are a lot of times where I'm in there and these times are set for perfect scenario. Perfect shop environment bolts that move without any sort of a fight. I use the labor matrix to address that difference. That being said, if I'm doing something like a wheel hub up here in the Northeast. I will also add time as well because the labor matrix still can't get close to adjusting for that.

Yeah and it's so hit and miss especially with the hubs. I had a 2011 Ford edge I did for a customer and the RT Rear was gone. I quoted either 2.5-3 hours. Got the bolts off hit it with the sledge twice and it fell right out. I took a little off the hub time. I still made good on it. Move forward two weeks we do the other side same thing quoted a few hours and I spent hours working it out. With the rust you just never know but try my best to quote it as accurately and fairly as possible
Aftermarket Installs
So I’ve had many people want me to install aftermarket down pipes or suspension or lighting etc. How do you qoute labor for these jobs? Add extra compared to standard replacement since it’s “Custom” or is it something I should just stay away from?

I think it really just depends on your business model and how you're set up and what your volume looks like. For example, I don't do exhaust work, but when it comes to suspension for example I'm not necessarily opposed to it as long as it's not Amazon or it's something that looks like it's a direct bolt-in. But I specify clearly there is no warranty on customer supplied parts and I will usually charge an additional cost to my labor rate. In mine tekmetric I have two labor rates saved. One is my standard labor rate. The other is labor rate for customer supplied parts which I believe is $25 for. I will say when it comes to brakes I am a hard no on customer supplied parts. For me there is too much liability there. But if we're talking some aftermarket lighting or converting to an LED fuck something like that. I'm not opposed
