Let me give you a coaching situation… Your client spends 20 minutes telling you about their partner. What they said. What they did. How selfish they are. How badly they’ve treated them. And by the end of it you’re thinking, “Wow. Their partner sounds awful.” Be careful. Because you’ve just heard one person’s version of a relationship involving TWO people. And as coaches, one of the biggest mistakes we can make is unconsciously joining our client’s story instead of coaching it. Sometimes that happens because we want to validate them. Sometimes because their story feels convincing. But sometimes… It’s because their story touches something unresolved in us. Maybe you’ve been cheated on. Rejected. Controlled. Ignored. Abandoned. Made to feel like you weren’t enough. So when you hear something similar from a client… You’re no longer just hearing THEIR story. Part of you is hearing yours. That’s where self-awareness becomes incredibly important. Because great coaching isn’t about deciding who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s about helping somebody see what they currently cannot see. Including their own patterns. Their own reactions. Their own responsibility. And their own power to change what happens next. That’s a big part of what I’m exploring in Monday’s live Masterclass Heal The Past: How To Stop Resentment Monday 7th September 6pm UK | 1pm EST Come to learn something for your clients… But also be brave enough to look at yourself.
