Shines vs. Partnerwork
I recently had a student tell me, “I don’t really see the point of doing shines. I just want to learn partnerwork—it's not like I’ll actually use shines when I’m social dancing, so why bother?” I have plenty of thoughts on this, but I’d love to hear yours first. Do you enjoy shines, partnerwork, or both? And do you think shines are important to practice? Let's discuss 🎙️💭

The Unspoken Rule at Social 🤐
Your facial & body language says A LOT, sometimes more than your words! Have you ever had someone tell you at a social, “You look upset — you should smile more”? Or danced with someone who never made eye contact, never smiled, and left you feeling a little thrown off? Or maybe you were simply tired, said no to a dance, and later found out they thought you were upset with them — or worse, that you were being arrogant? All of the above! Sometimes if I am not in the right headspace, I will take all sorts of things personally. Ugh. My toxic trait. Once I was dancing with my friend Chris and at the end of the dance he was upset with me because he thought I was upset during the dance. But I wasn't. I just had to focus because I know he likes to throw a lot of moves (his dance love language is challenge and mine is connection and playfulness) and I knew he'd be happy if I executed properly, so I wasn't smiling. I was focusing so he could enjoy. I was amazed at how even my friend could read me wrong and how in turn that probably meant I was reading anything and everything wrong. Epiphany moment.
