READ FIRST: How to use this community
Hi all, Thanks for joining me in here. Here are your first steps for getting the most out of this community. 1. Copy this format and comment on this post with -your name -where you are from -your musical background and what you are trying to achieve in your playing 2. Create a post, either sharing a cool jazz violin video that you love, a question about learning to play jazz or even an interesting piece of advice you have been given about learning to improvise. 3. Doing all of the above will now mean you are a Level 2 member. You will now have access to all of the free courses in the classroom. (5 simple licks in G, Jazz Bowing, learn Honeysuckle Rose, Jazz Listening List) Bonus: Tell me in the poll below what it is you are interested in improving in your playing (this helps me understand how to help you best)

Peter - Bluegrass background and started gypsy jazz/swing several years ago. I've previously been a member of Matt's community as he has great stuff. I just opened a nonprofit music school in Bend Oregon. I took some time off musically over the last few years, so recently have started working on improving my skills personally and for teaching workshops and lessons. www.newearthworkshop.org. Favorite fiddlers include Joe Venuti, Costel Nitescu and others of course. Looking forward to using Matt's instruction and community.
New strings....?
When do people change strings? Just when they snap? Otherwise it feels like a pretty random choice/ difficult judgement to decide when the sound is my technique or due to the ' hard wear'

I use Vison Heavy, moderately priced compared to some. I usually change the A string 3 times or so when it unravels before I change the whole set. They seem to last a long time. Maybe it's my violin, but I haven't really seen the sound benefit of more expensive strings. Justin Branum was using those strings a few years ago; I think he is using different strings now.
