Dr. Mark Scatterday
Hi friends! This Thursday, I will be interviewing Mark Scatterday, director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble!. What would you like to learn from one of the preeminent band conductors of our time? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Scatterday

1. What are some common pitfalls you see from student composers learning to write for wind ensembles? 2. How do you choose new music to program and who you decide to commission works from?
Any recommendations on choosing a baton?
Any recommendations for a first baton? I watched a few videos but there seems to be a wide variety of choices and me being a newbie, I have no clue. Thanks, Pete

@Robert Bigley Thank you!
Delta David Gier Questions
As it turns out, my FIRST interview will be tomorrow with Maestro Delta David Gier. https://www.deltadavidgier.com He is brilliant and such a generous spirit. What questions would you like me to ask? (also, see my previous post about Dr. Scheibe's interview which is happening Wednesday)

Enjoyed this. The part where he talked about the various conductors was fun.
Jo-Michael Scheibe Interview
Here is the full interview! There's lots about his formative years at the start of the video, then we get into rehearsal planning, programming tips, and working with composers. He also shares some insights of working with instrumentalists from a choral conductor's perspective. Enjoy!

Watched this today. Great interview. I studied with Dr. Rod Butler who was a student at CSULB around the same time mentioned in the interview. He had some great Carpenters stories as well.
Why Technique Matters
I would be so frustrated if I was playing in Sir John Barbirolli's orchestra here. I'm curious what y'all think is going on in this rehearsal of Bruckner 7? How is Barbirolli's technique failing him (and his ensemble)?

He is obviously irritated and that is probably making everyone nervous. He doesn’t give clear signals that he is going to resume conducting. It’s like he just jump starts without a clear downbeat.
