Hello fellow South African! I’m only seeing this post now, @Emmanuel Olajide but my name’s Njabulo Mpungose. I’m also based in Johannesburg, South Africa (Randburg to be specific). Nice to meet you and a belated welcome to the Skool community (though I joined in November so is it really that belated lol 😅). Haven’t seen you in the weekly calls. Hopefully if we bump into each other we can maybe collaborate to make wonderful works of art. In terms of kinda film I wanna make, I want to make unapologetically bold and genre-defying cinema centering marginalised individuals (black, LGBT+, neurodiverse), as I am myself those things and wanna confront deep truths with emotional tenderness, juxtaposing ordinary realism with high fantasy and splendour and use of the supernatural, and slapstick humour and a whole lot of melding of the genre. Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, thriller, mystery, comedy, you name it. May us South African filmmakers rise!
How did you get started with filmmaking?
For me it was capturing skate boarding and then i became OBSESSED with cameras, editing and all things around moving image - how did you make YOUR first steps? Share

Hello! @Jonas Marcel and co., In order for me to answer this, I’d have to share where my love for film first started; VHS (of spider man, the goofy movie, Aladdin 3,), DVDs and DSTV (give the VHS ans DvD plug and what the subject matter of my doc film is, I know it’s on the nose lol 😅): growing up I’d use the iMovie app to film stuff, trailers maybe short films. When I was in primary school, i even posted a YouTube , i don’t know if you can call it a short film but it utilised the effect on iMovie where a missile was launched and bombed places (I was also a big Call of Duty fan/player around this time, don’t @ me lol), where I saw the middle and tried running and the bombs got me. Years later, I deleted the YouTube cause I thought it was cringe and given I saw how cancel culture made things where it hit home to be cautious of what you post online cause it’s forever, sooo../ yeah. And I wanted to be a filmmaker but long story short I chose a more stable career/vocation to study and the film but never left me and years later, I figured you know what: lemme start filming. So as many of filmmaking journey know, when I first joined here, I filmed shots for a short film about how things in public are different behind closed doors. However I had concerns about privacy issues and then the doc film challenge came up and I’ve been ever since focused on my doc film, about where have DVDs gone. Also complementing this is my teaching myself how filmmaking works, courtesy of YouTube channel studio binder’s Shot List and Advanced Filmmaking Technqiues series (I’m currently on episode 1 film tone for the latter. Learning a great deal and made me understand why, camera exposure wise, Francis Ford Coppola is respected and revered for his work on the godfather). This became unintentionally long, but yeah that’s how I first fell in love with film and found my way back to it 😅
Updates on doc film - some obstacles in my wake
Happy new year everyone! Here's some updates on my journey of the doc film, which is filled with obstacles if you will. @Jonas Marcel , @Eric Young and @Bridget OSullivan , you make some if not cameos, some mentions in the video 😜. So yeah, the video clip says it all. And again, feast your eyes on the colour coordination of my camera!

Hello, here's an updated comment/post where in the video I detail the way forward with this editing thing. With what I said in the below video I wonder if this shouldn't be a separate post. @Jonas Marcel hope it provides some clarity. Granted based on what I said with how I wanna edit going forwards, for some reason I feel i am being disobedient (like a pupil disregarding a teacher's instructions) even though we are too grown for that and this ain't necessarily the case, and probs ain't that deep. Must be some stuff to unpack in my own time. Anyway, enjoy the video! 😁
Skip the struggle, lose your wings
The follow up video, exploring the role that focus, effort and sacrifice has in creating beauty, art the skill to do so. I'm open to positive criticism everyone!

Interesting message @Eric Young! Really like us the audience seeing you in the video. Really great. Maybe improve on the establishing shots (I don’t know if I’m being a hypocrite advising it that given my film and the shots I took for it look very rookie-like 😅). Really think for future films showing more of you would be great!
Greatness vs comfort
Just wanted to share a quick video I made for social media. Open to positive criticism guys!
Greatness vs comfort

Hi. @Eric Young I loved your narration. I wanted to ask; is this video for a brand? Like forgive me for being frank, but what’s the intention/point of the video? Are you tryna do a motivational video? A doc film of sorts? An ad for a company? I ask not to discourage you but cause the video strikes me as a sort of “go hard and grind” video, like a sort of motivational video. Is that what your intention is? I don’t know what the intent of the video is, so I just wanted some clarity. But in terms of constructive feedback, maybe clarifying the intent of the story of the video at hand? Well the intent is to clearly show how in our society’s quest for comfort and convenience greatness gets offset. Just wanna ask like what the intended purpose of the video is? I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or nay-saying/hateration

@Eric Young aahhhh, explains a lot. So in this video you’re basically explaining how you view how our society prioritises comfort at the expense of greatness?
