Diabetes and Diversity - Safiya Basir
Yesterday, I attended an event hosted by Njia Kai, lengendary Detroit cultural event promotor. A multigenerational gathering of Black Women. We discussed Diabetes Diversity, with the young lady presenting sharing her lived experience with Type 1 diabetes. As the conversation continued it became evident that many women in the audience from 35-65+ were dealing with some form of metabolic challenges, Type 2 diabetes specifically. That's why this community exists. A space to learn and heal. Looking forward inviting Safiya Basir joining us in the community to talk about her journey. She is a diabetes coach and continuing her education to provide culturally relevant care to our community.

Tiny Wins
Woke up in Gratitude and wondering what Tiny Win I want to accomplish today? Anyone shared a tiny win for our December Challenge yet? Sometimes it happens in retrospect for me - like at the end of the day I realize - "I did that". But for my December reset I'm working on intentionally setting my Tiny Wins. And celebrating them. Have anyone set or made a Tiny Win?
Accountability
I took a 10 minute walk after lunch. You lower your natural blood sugar spike after eating by just doing some movement - take a walk, exercise, or even sitting down and doing calf lifts.
Accountability
Comfort or Community
I'm looking out my living room window at fresh snow while I sip tea. I've been up for a few hours and getting it in on administrative tasks for my businesses. But I've hit a slight wall. My apartment is warm. I have food and drinks. But, I feel like I could be even. more productive if I head to my favorite coffee shop to get another couple of hours of work done. But instead of looking at the snow - I would have to get out in it. But here's the thing. I've been working in coffee shops forever - before it became a huge thing. Why do I seem to study better, get more work done - even as there's hustle and bustle around me and a chorus of voices sometimes oversharing. I think its the feeling of being in Community. In my apartment I'm isolated with myself and then there's all the things staring at me (pile of clothes), dishes to be washed - the usual suspects trying to get my attention. Seems we humans tend to be more productive when we are in Community. So let me bundle up, call a Lyft and head out. I also have a client I need to see so I'll call her and ask if she would like to join me at In Harmony Cafe and Sweets. I can win my day and participate in a circular economy (pretty sure I'm buying something) that helps my dollars to circulate in my Community a little before it heads to the broader "economy". If you are out and about - stop by (google it) I can take a break and we can chop it up for a few.
BBQ TOFU RECIPE
A Meatless Substitute for Your Holiday Table
BBQ TOFU RECIPE

I found that even avowed meat eaters enjoy this BBQ Tofu recipe. There are more tofu choices these days, not just the original made from soy. A lot of people are concerned about the phytoestrogen in soy, but research hasn't found any credible link to them being cancer causing. As a matter of fact, they can bind to estrogen receptors and block stronger natural estrogen and have some benefits to lowering cancer risk. Asian women have showed a lower incidence of cancer until they adopt a more western diet. But if you want to avoid soy, there are alternatives on the market that make good substitutes, Try out this recipe using original tofu or even tempeh, or a soyfree substitute.
