@Adex Felicia I do my best to tell the story trusting that the work I’ve put into technique will pay off for that side.

@Adex Felicia I absolutely often feel emotion leads the performance. When listening to singers I have no problem with people slightly out of pitch or timing off if they are engaging me in the story and sound authentic. Indeed many of my favourite singers are not "great singers." So, if my technique gets a little off kilter I don't mind that if I've been lost in the story. If it's because I'm not thinking about the song because I'm distracted by something physical around me then it's a problem lol This is also probably why I don't like the majority of pop music. However I do love jazz singers and they often have great technique - but they often don't conform to singing on the beat or straying from "in key" notes.
Mix trick or trash?
We’re going to film a video called “mix trick or trash?” for YouTube. Well read out a common mixing tip, then each vote if it’s a great trick, or total trash. What are the most controversial mixing tips and tricks you can think of that we could cover?

32 bit allows you to ignore gain staging
Video fun
If you slow the videos down to half speed, everybody is drunk teaching.

I usually play them at 1.5 so everyone looks like they are on 10 espressos by 9am.
Remember to Make Backups
I was just getting started on a mix for a contest: organizing tracks, setting up buses, doing some basic track cleanup, etc. I had been saving my work regularly, but not as separate backup files. Then I either found a bug in my DAW or fat fingered something, but my project file got corrupted. Sigh.... So I decided to start over. There went an hour of work. I tried to reproduce the issue to no avail. All worked fine on the second go. Not the end of the world considering I was just getting started on the mix and it wasn't for a client. Backups are free and easy. Don't forget to make them as you go (just in case)!

I used to be a graphic designer and was building a 32 page monthly community magazine for a client. One month terror struck. As they walked into the office to approve the final layouts and I had the last two changes to make - my hard drive died. The deadline for going to print was two days away. Luckily I had most of the graphics backed up but the layout and a lot of the graphics were gone and all I had left was the laser printed proofs. 37 hours no sleep and minimal food but I got it finished and to the printer. If you’re making a New Year’s Resolution let it be “I will have a real time backup plan in place in the next two weeks. Best I’ve found is having Dropbox and having all my project files in the Dropbox folder. That’s where I did the work from. Plus I had a backup drive on my computer using TimeMachine (Mac) plus a NAS raid to backup to weekly.
What DAW Do Y'all Use?
I am curious to find out what DAWs are being used. More importantly, does the DAW matter more than the skill put into using it? I personally use Cakewalk.
