What does self defense mean to you?
The meaning of self defense has certainly changed for me. I first started training in Taekwondo when I was 18. Newly graduated from high school and going to college my thinking on self defense was pretty basic. If a bad guy tries to mug me I am going to learn how to fight back hard so I can survive. A fellow student in my class was in the military and earned his black belt while serving in Korea. He told me mindset in a threatening situation is incredibly important. His mindset was saying to the attacker ""I may die, you will die" After training with him for years, i can assure you this did not come from ego but more of a quiet certainty. I think that mentality is the same as the samurai. A willingness to accept death as one outcome helps take away fear of that outcome and actually increases your odds of survival. Eventually I came to realize self defense is as much about prevention and awareness as it is about a physical confrontation. Trust your instincts, avoid situations that don't seem right. Have constant situational awareness without being paranoid. What are your thoughts on self defense? I would love your tips on every day safety.

https://youtu.be/y1-yHfsXBNg?si=rHrgh2uP1Z6lsnLB I was going to open a post for this video. But this is good place. Look at the video and the persons awarness and intent on self controll. The sword is only extent of his awerness aura( for a lack of words). As in real life i belive attackers are kan see people being aware of therr surrounding. Did you notice the day you in the mood for a fight no one mess with you in general. Also for me when im aware what my thoughts are pushing me to easy emotional out burst, but self controll and almost a 3rd person awarness of these internal forcess , like yin and yang idea. And the self controll. Gives me the controll of making smart informed dissisions abd not bunders ons emotional guilty releases coz its easy'er. Now comming back to self deffence . This in itself is mutiple applicationa . Planning the right outcome in work home life or on the street or late at night. Plan ahead ,avoid when can . And learn to fight when you can not avoid. Sumtimes its not worth the win and goimg to jail .and sumtimes you just need to look more difficult to attack then the next person. The rest is up to faith after that
Practice practice practice
In class we often talk about home practice or daily practices. Sure there is suburi and rokudangiri, and the kenjutsu and iai katas, but ultimately, it's the little things that do the most. One thing Angier Sensei would say is that every time you're at a red light, relax your shoulders. For me, when I have a second waiting for food to cook, I release my hips and open. Sometimes I'll do what we call "separating the body" and move into ichimongigoshi (I might have spelled that wrong, sorry Sensei). A big one for me was walking the dog. He'd stop to do his business, I'd fix my posture, and then start walking like we do on the mat. We also have cats. When I would scoop their litter, instead of just leaning over, I lower myself into seiza, scoop, then raise myself back to standing. This is also a part of making the art your own. *Everything* is kenjutsu. How do you incorporate your training into your every day life?

What got you started in training?
Hi everyone! Just curious what got you interested in training? It could be kenjutsu or any martial art. For me I remember when I was in 5th grade there was a martial arts demonstration at my school that really made me curious. In high school I took a few women's self defense classes and once I graduated I took the chance and started training in Taekwondo. I have been involved in martial arts pretty much since then with only a few breaks. So what got you started?

It was the dissaplin on how swords men and ladys controlled there weapon and i'm talking about all blade weapons not just with the katana. But more so i read mushashi's book of 5 rings and follow it up with the creed behind bushido. I wa going through hard time in my life developin myself and the morality of these men stuck with me . So i want it for my self as well. The blade be'ing a dangourus weapon and controlling self to ,and the mind space to controll the blade that becomes extention of me because it dangourus and need to be aware where the edge is and where it is .. This is why i think ranking never mattered to me . In mma with open hand the kumite was almost like a light bulb moment especialy if i got smaked a bit by a better fighter . To come back better was so fun.
