Controversial Topic: Booth Rent vs. Commission Which Model Actually Builds Better Barbers?
This debate has been going on for YEARS in the industry, and everybody has an opinion… but I want to hear YOURS. Barbers: - Do you feel like booth rent gives you more freedom…or does it make you lazy with no real structure? - Do you feel like commission shops take too much of your money…or does the mentorship, walk-ins, systems, and accountability justify it? - Which model helped you grow FASTER in your career and why? Shop Owners: - Are barbers more committed and dependable on commission,or do they perform better when they’re paying booth rent out of their own pocket? - Which model gives you a stronger culture and long-term retention? - If you could start over today, which model would you choose and why? 🔥 Follow-Up: The Real Question Nobody Wants to Answer… Are barbers choosing booth rent because they want freedom or because they want to avoid accountability, systems, and business growth? And… Are shop owners choosing commission because it benefits the barbers or because it keeps them “locked in” and makes the owner more money? Let’s be HONEST with this one. Drop your REAL thoughts, your experiences, your wins, your frustrations. This discussion is meant to open eyes, challenge mindsets, and help every barber understand what structure ACTUALLY builds a successful long-term career. Comment below — Booth Rent or Commission? Which one is TRULY better for the future of our industry?

I currently work in a shop on commission. Its great for building clientele in a new area. However, booth rent is the goal. Regardless of the situation tho, I feel as a barber that is making a name for themselves .. You should always provide the same service to your clients, that you would want to recieve. For a long-term career tho, booth rent i feel is the way to go. You’re working not only to pay your rent, but also put money in your pocket. Make it make sense, right? You’re going to go above and beyond for exposure, recognition, respect and for the money obviously. I feel like the effort you put into anything you do, is a reflection of yourself.. and if you want to excel.. You got do it the hard way and put in that work, because nothing comes easy. So while comission still pays you regardless, you’ll get more out of booth rent and barbering as a whole by applying yourself.
🎯 What Do You Wish You Knew Earlier in Your Barber Journey? 💈
Aloha Barbers — let’s get real for a second. 🤙🏽 We all started somewhere… Maybe it was your first shaky fade, your first no-show, or the first time you questioned if this path was really for you. But looking back now, what’s one thing you wish you knew earlier in your career that would’ve made the road smoother, your growth faster, or your mindset stronger? Was it about business? Boundaries? Branding? Was it how to build clientele, price your value, or show up confidently behind the chair? Sharing your lessons can be the exact thing another barber in this community needs to hear today — and it’s also a powerful way to reflect on how far you’ve come. 💬 Drop yours in the comments. Let’s learn from each other, level up together, and make sure the next wave of barbers rises even stronger. #AlohaBarberCollective #LessonsInTheFade #BarberGrowth

Sometimes we get so excited about the outcome , that we don’t realize the amount of work that will go into getting there. I wish I knew sooner, so that I could have built my confidence earlier and focused on the whole picture not just the end game. Its a never ending learning process tho… Just gotta keep going.
⛽️Fuel the Machine: How Physical & Mental Health Elevate Your Craft
Let’s get real—your mindset is your foundation, and it starts with how you treat your body and mind. You can’t expect to perform like a high-level barber if you’re running on fumes, eating like trash, skipping sleep, and carrying stress with no outlet. The sharpest fades come from a sharp mind—and that begins with your physical and mental health. Before we talk business, branding, or building a client base, we have to talk about you—because you are the engine behind it all. This game takes stamina. Long hours on your feet. Back-to-back clients. Conversations all day. Creative focus. Precision. And let’s not forget the business side that adds even more pressure. That’s why in Module 1, we kick things off with mindset—and a big part of that is how you’re treating your body and mind. The benefits of staying dialed in with your health: - Better focus behind the chair - Higher energy throughout your day - Increased confidence - Less burnout - More clarity in decision-making - Stronger emotional control when dealing with tough clients or setbacks You can’t pour from an empty cup. And this industry will drain you if you don’t take care of yourself first. How many of you are currently locked in on your physical and mental health? What’s one habit you’ve added—or want to add—to perform at your best? Drop it below and let’s build some accountability around this. Barbering is mental warfare as much as it is an art. Let’s sharpen both.

Both mental & physical is an everyday battle tbh. I have Multiple Sclerosis, and for the most part I like to act like I don’t. It takes a toll on my body and one minute i’ll be fine… the next it’s like a train hit me and i’m out. I’m pushing through it tho, bc that’s the only option I have. The past few weeks to a month, the fatigue has been overwhelming… which explains less posting or content creating. I keep my mind healthy tho and do my best to fill my cup with positive energy and thoughts. Makes the body better, even when it’s not 100. 😉
