Mark started coaching a new team - here's what he did...
From college to high school to youth, @Mark Cascio has coached and consulted at every level! One of his current adventures is leading an inexperienced middle school group, and he was kind enough to share his first practice plan and takeaways 🙌 🧠 Prime: 9s - We started simple with one line in an action spot and one in the opposite corner so I could introduce our spots and 9s. 1️⃣ Q1: FIBA We played early because they’re used to nothing but drills. The focus was hunting 9s with the ball and spacing without it. Just that shift alone improved spacing tenfold. - 👉 I stopped to “skinny” quick stops, then we played 1v1 Ball-on-Back with a "9 or No" constraint... use a quick stop if no 9. 2️⃣ Q2: Attack Training — Intro to 7s We worked on stopping with no 9, but they weren’t hunting 7s off the catch. Once we layered that in, we were hunting, stopping, kicking, and weaponizing the catch. 3️⃣ Q3: 3v2 Advantage Game Now it was time to connect the dots. Hunt 9s, kick for 7s. Our ball speed slowed, so we went into 4v2 Tight Quarters to help them feel faster ball speed before returning to 3v2. - 🔒 I also introduced "ball" and "wall" defensively here. 4️⃣ Q4: Back to FIBA We finished with FIBA again to see what stuck and transferred. - 💡 It’s amazing how much cleaner spacing, better decisions, and faster play you can get when you simply train players to hunt advantage instead of run drills. --- --- --- ⚠️ For those who’ve coached younger or newer groups, what’s one ‘a-ha moment’ you’ve had with them?
