What’s up Skate Fam! Welcome to the community. Thrilled to have you here. Take a sec to introduce yourself, doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated. Just be yourself. …ill go first. 👋🏽My name is Knejie Allen. I’ve been skating for 10 years. Currently rolling in custom Riedell 3200s w and arius plate and probably some slick wheels (95A+). Im in Kansas City and own a Skate school, SK8SHOT Studios.

Un-learning the "skate really hard, really fast" mentality in order to learn footwork has been a fun challenge so far. I try to do a simple downtown and I travel 20 feet for some reason 😂😂

@Janelle Kathryn Welcome! And whoa, Venice Beach!! What an iconic place to be learning to skate.
Starting Roller Derby to increase skills
I attended an interest meeting in my city for Roller derby last week. The new recruit program will start in a couple of weeks and I'm excited about it. I don't know how the sessions will be conducted, but I'll try to post my progress. I hope to level up my skating skills with the 12-week program. 😁

@Aleeta Powe It's pretty fun, I'm doing one in my pfp actually! I think it originates from figure skating. While rolling, crouch ALL the way down, extend one leg in front of you, grab your foot and lift it off the floor. The extended leg doesn't have to go super high, usually it stays parallel to the floor, and you can kinda steer yourself with it like a boat rudder. All your weight is on your other leg, which stays underneath you in that crouched position. There are a couple variations of the trick but that's the gist of it. Lots of fun, but you definitely want to stretch off-skates and loosen up first. If my hamstrings are too tight for me to comfortably fold forward and touch my toes, or grab my feet while seated on the floor in an L shape, then this trick will be uncomfortable for me.

Narrow feet skate help
I was so excited to get home from work today to have my new sure grip skates oxfords waiting for me. I bought two sizes 8 and 9. The8 was right length but I had so much room in ball of foot and I had the ankle portion laced to touching and still loose.. I am a new skater who used to skate in the 80s. I m looking for a women’s narrow skate but not cheapies but not a thousand dollars either. Please help.

@Erin McCronich That is quite a long haul! If it were me I might make a fun day trip of it. Get fitted by a pro and try on some skates, have lunch somewhere new, maybe hit a rink etc etc. But I'm out on the west coast and can't say whether the retailers up there are worth the trek you'd be making. Hopefully they are! Doing some research, I'm seeing similar suggestions online as what Marisa offered. People say some Riedell and Moxi boots run slim. Might be worth a try, hard to go wrong with Riedell!!

@Erin McCronich Now, it was hard to find because they don't advertise well, but I see Wicked Skatewear opened a location in Pittsburgh: 4618 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA wickedskatewear.com (412) 579-0522 If interested, they recommend calling ahead for their current hours and what they have in stock since they are a small business. This is a CRAZY coincidence, their first location is in SoCal and I actually used to buy gear from them + skated with some of the people who worked there. Had no idea they opened another location. Small business but if the team is anything like it was 12 years ago, they know their stuff.
Off-Skate Work
I saw a post earlier and there were a couple people mentioning the importance of “off-skate” routines- I like to work on eagle in both directions against a wall to help the flexies and stretch- what are some things y’all are doing off-skate that is proving helpful when you get back in skates?!

For me - yoga, calisthenics, balance exercises, rowing, and I am MUCH more consistent with these activities when I think of them as "off-skates work" and not "exercise" lol.
One Leg Balance - Tips For Beginners
I’m struggling with One Leg Balance. May someone please give me some advice.

A lot of great advice here, I will throw in my two cents: sticking your arms out in a T shape can be helpful when learning to balance like this. I sometimes feel dorky doing it as a grown man, but it's a helpful counterbalance to get me started and the more I get used to whatever new one-foot move I'm working on, the less I need the arms.

If you ever do something cool at the rink and hear an enthusiastic "ALLLRIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!", that's me, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. 😌
