Detox winter broth #2
Yesterday I juiced a cucumber and pineapple. Tonight I’ll be using the pineapple bark I saved and adding a sprig of rosemary and fresh tumeric to no sodium organic veggie broth to make this healing elixir. This is what it does for the body: 1. Digestive Ease & Lightness Pineapple skin carries trace bromelain, and while the flesh has far more, the skin still releases a gentle enzymatic “softener” into the broth. It acts like a quiet janitor: easing the belly, helping proteins break down more smoothly, and reducing that boggy, stagnant feeling after meals. 2. Anti-Inflammatory Support Both turmeric and rosemary contribute here: - Turmeric infuses curcumin’s calming influence into the liquid. Even in food-level doses, it softens low-grade inflammation in joints, muscles, and the gut lining. - Rosemary carries rosmarinic acid — a slightly minty, uplifting compound that has its own anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Together they form a subtle “cooling and clearing” wave through the tissues. 3. Liver & Lymph Encouragement The pineapple skin + turmeric pairing creates a gentle detox signal — not the dramatic kind, more like opening a window in a stuffy room. - The liver appreciates the bitter-sweet compounds and responds with smoother bile flow. - The lymphatic system moves more freely, especially with the aromatic push from rosemary. 4. Hydration With Minerals Even a no-sodium veggie broth contains minerals (potassium, magnesium, trace elements). Boiling everything together gives you: - A mineralized, hydrating broth - A warm fluid that encourages circulation and bowel regularity - Something easy on digestion and compatible with your raw-till-4 rhythm 5. Antioxidant “Rinse” Rosemary + pineapple skin produce a golden, aromatic antioxidant infusion. Think of it like a little internal rinse that: - Reduces oxidative stress - Supports skin repair - Helps the microbiome feel less inflamed and more balanced 6. Mood & Nervous-System Effects

@Sally Mitchell I tend in my practice and mind separate Chinese herbs and readily available “cooking herbs,” like rosemary, thyme, oregonol, bay leaf, tumeric, all of which have medicinal properties and complement the food we cook or make for a nourishing broth as such. I think food and herbs are like conversations, enough variety for talking points, but too many becomes crowded and noisy and difficult for the body to understand. It is true that some foods and some herbs complement each other, like beans and rice, or coconut milk and cayenne like in tom yum to create balance.
Easy Detox Broth: veggie broth, apple, tumeric, bay leaf
Hydration + Mineral Infusion (Veggie Broth Base) Even a no-sodium organic vegetable broth contains: - Electrolytes (potassium, magnesium) - Phytonutrients from slow-simmered vegetables - Trace minerals that gently support adrenal and kidney function Effect: - Restores hydration - Supports low-level detox - Warms digestion without being heavy Chinese Medicine: - Light vegetable broth supports Spleen Qi and warms the center without dampness. 2. Apple → Gentle Liver, Gut & Lung Support Apples add: - Pectin → binds toxins in the gut - Malic acid → softens tissues, supports the liver - Natural sweetness → harmonizes digestion Effects: - Settles digestion - Soothes inflammation in the gut lining - Mild blood sugar stabilization Chinese Medicine: - Apples generate body fluids (Jin-Ye) and mildly moisten the Lungs - The sweet neutral nature nourishes Spleen and calms the middle. 3. Turmeric → Anti-inflammatory, Circulation, Liver Qi Movement Turmeric offers: - Curcumin (major anti-inflammatory) - Mild cholagogue effect (moves bile) - Circulation improvement Effects: - Reduces inflammation - Eases muscle/joint soreness - Supports liver detox pathways - Encourages smoother digestion Chinese Medicine: - Turmeric (Jiang Huang) moves Qi and Blood, opens stagnation, and reduces pain. 4. Bay Leaves → Digestive + Blood Sugar Regulation Bay leaf compounds (cineole, eugenol) help: - Reduce bloating and gas - Improve carbohydrate metabolism - Calm smooth muscle of the gut - Slight antimicrobial effect Effects: - Less bloating - More stable energy - Better digestion of heavier foods Chinese Medicine: - Bay leaf has a warming, Qi-moving quality that reduces Food Stagnation and harmonizes the middle burner. 5. The Combination → A Warm, Anti-Inflammatory, Kidneys-Supporting Winter Tonic When these ingredients simmer together, you create a: - Warm, easily digestible therapeutic broth - Anti-inflammatory elixir - Spleen-friendly, Qi-building tonic - Kidney-supportive winter drink - Gentle detoxifier without cold/raw juices

@Sally Mitchell This is a good base broth that can be modified. For instance, for more lymphatic drainage affect, organic russet potato peels and leaks can be added. For more immune system potency, going somewhere spicy with jalapenos, diced onion. For more of a hearty soupy feel, nutritional yeast stirred in at the end.
