Undiagnosed issue
Hey guys, I have a wisteria chinensis. It was air layered 3 years ago and has stabilised ever since. Last winter, some sort of fungus formed around 2 wounds, although I had carefully covered them with antifungal Japanese putty. I had cleaned it with a knife and sprayed for fungus the whole plant in spring. When the wisteria bloomed, I’ve noticed that whole branch actually was dead. Can someone help me understand what happened? What is the disease? Is it specific to wisteria? Did it cause the branch to die? If not, why did it happen? Thanks in advance! Răzvan

Based on your description, your Wisteria was likely hit by Canker (Botryosphaeria) or Coral Spot, common fungal pathogens that enter through open wounds. Even though you used Japanese putty, any moisture or spores trapped underneath during winter would have created a perfect breeding ground; the fungus then attacked the branch's vascular system, blocking the water flow so that the whole branch collapsed when it tried to bloom in spring. To save the rest of the tree, prune the dead branch completely back until you see 100% clean, green wood (making sure to sanitize your tools between cuts so you don't spread it), and apply a liquid copper fungicide to dry out the wound instead of a heavy paste.
Advice
I recently obtained this California juniper. All the branches were pointed upwards and I didn’t like the overall profile. This is my first attempt at wiring a tree. Am I headed in the right direction?

It’s your first attempt, so that already is heading in the right direction. 🙂. Check out our video on shaping and styling your bonsai with wiring here: https://youtu.be/iRt-STp-Lds?si=X7GSlNI8GKEH16QC
New Video This Week!
Hi Everyone, Tien and I have had some time off over the new year after quite a busy end to 2025. I'm back into edit mode and a new video is coming out this week. It was one of my favourites we filmed last year, Tien makes a "Forest Style" bonsai by using the raft technique. Keep an eye out here or on Easy Bonsai YouTube Channel. Cheers Matt.
