Has anyone ever skated on a boat? Like on a cruise ship?
I was communicating with Bont customer service about boot sizing and they said to make sure I don’t go too large or it will feel like I’m “skating on boats,” meaning that my feet would look very large. I had the random thought of wondering whether anyone ever skated on a cruise ship, and he said “So just recently Mr. Bont went on a cruise and they had a small rink aboard and he skated.” I never had any desire to go on a cruise, but if they had a skating rink, I would consider it. Know of any?

@Leona L Sounds like what they told me when I asked whether I could use the dance studio at our fitness center to practice skating when no one else is using it. I know that some skaters have been able to do that at some other places.

@Leona L Oh wow. Good to know. Maybe there's hope of finding something like that here!
Slades (shoes with detachable skates)
Anyone interested in purchasing an essentially brand new set of Slades? I bought these on an impulse but after trying them on and skating very briefly in my condo, I decided (a) they're too big for me and (b) I prefer my regular skates. The ones I bought are black, EU size 39, which equates to US men's 7, women's 8.5. List price is $185, but I'd be happy to sell them for $125 plus shipping. I'll throw in the buddy bag (carrying case for the wheels) for free ($27 value). Picture of my Slades (still in box) below. @Jay Griffin Oh no is right! Let me be the little voice that says "don't go there!" I still can't believe I did! But thankfully, they were great about returns.

@Signorina Rollini For sure. Glad I got it out of my system. Safely!
Has anyone made a switch from a high boot to a low boot? How did it go?
I’ve been skating on SureGrip Boardwalks and just (a few minutes ago) ordered a pair of VNLA Anniversary v2.0 Astro Indoor Roller Skates. One reason is that in the past 2 months I’ve been switching my shoes to “barefoot,” which have a flat flexible sole, a wide toe base, and no heel raise. They feel great—my posture and gait is better and my knee stiffness is almost gone. The other reason is that now my toes are feeling very cramped in the Boardwalks. So, since I can’t skate barefoot 🙃 I think VNLAs are as close as I can get—wide and no heel raise. I’m a little concerned about not having ankle support, and how the shift might affect how my skating feels. Any advice?

@Jay Griffin Did well on the 101 Rollerbones today. Next steps will be to loosen the trucks and change the cushions

Update: A no-go on the VNLA's low boot. I decided to return them. I just can't get used to the missing heel and ankle wrap. I'm exchanging them for VNLA's a-la-mode, which I'm learning is also wide-foot (i.e., bunion) friendly. Roller Skate Nation deserves an award for their patient customer service.
Who’s doing the “Boots on the Ground” line dance?
We started here this week. Here’s a video on skates. (Not us. Yet.) And a tutorial for slow learners like me who need to start out in socks sans skates.

@Signorina Rollini You know, I saw that one and thought I posted it, but now I see that I didn't! 🫢So thank you for finding it and adding it. I think it's great. I'm taking it section by section.

@Jay Griffin I did a reverse once: skates to socks. I already had my skates off and they started a line dance so I went out in my socks. Someone later said he thought I was really rocking it out there--until he looked at my feet.
Turning Music Into Movement: My Secret to Unlocking Flow on Skates 🎵🛼
Yesterday, something clicked deep while skating — and it wasn’t just the wheels on the floor. It was the music. I realized jam skating isn’t just about moves; it’s about translating sound into flow. When Earth, Wind, and Fire came on, it wasn’t just background noise — it was like my legs found a language. Here’s a simple but powerful flow drill I made up if you want to vibe with the music and feel your skates differently: 🔹 "Catch the Beat" Drill: - First 8 counts: crossover left/right with small hops - Next 8 counts: surf on one leg like you’re riding waves - Switch direction when the chorus hits - Add a little freestyle when the beat drops The idea is simple: don't fight the music. Let the music dance you. 🔥 Pro tip: pick a song you loved growing up. Nostalgia boosts confidence and swagger. Would love to hear — what's your favorite song to skate to that instantly unlocks your best moves? 🎶🛼 Drop it below! 👇

I love that. I can see the line of skaters forming behind you. I want to put skates on now and try the surf thing. I'll pick Superman Lover, Johnny Guitar Watson (1976, I'm old). You get to add a little air guitar in the last 2 minutes and really feel it.

Late bloomer here. I started skating in 2022 at age 69. I'm lucky to have 4 rinks close by, with 3 that offer a morning session for 50+ folks.
