🌿 What Have You Unlearned Since Starting This Journey?
Permaculture isn’t just about learning new techniques. Its also about unlearning the mindset we were raised with. The industrial world teaches us to: - Prioritize speed over care - Chase efficiency over balance - Rely on systems instead of ourselves - Treat land as a resource instead of a living partner When you step into homesteading and permaculture, those patterns start to crack. And suddenly you realize: ❌ More is not always better ❌ Perfection is a trap ❌ Nature doesn’t move on deadlines ❌ Slowing down isn’t lazy—it’s wise ❌ Productivity ≠ value Personally, I had to unlearn the idea that “work” only counts if it’s busy, loud, or monetized. Now, when I sit with my animals, walk the land, or just observe a system doing its thing without my interference—I see that as success, not wasted time. So I want to ask you: - What’s something you’ve had to unlearn on this path? - Was it hard to let go of? - What changed for you after you did? Drop your answer below 👇Let’s give each other permission to release what no longer serves us.

I grew up not being taught anything by my parents in regards to any of this. My Grammy was the one that gave me those life lessons. She taught me that everything grows the way it’s gonna grow, not how a human wants it to. That applied to everything! So I’ve been blessed to look at things differently. Like right now I am having to live in an apartment in a complex. (My personal version of hell, but it’s where we are right now.) I have two storage racks covered in plants, a number of which died. It doesn’t bother me. They weren’t meant to be inside. I have had to let go of the concept that if you’re not in the perfect situation you can still grow. Like the apartment. I’ve had to learn to stay happy regardless of where I am. That’s been liberating! I garden everywhere else, keep my animals at friends places. Some days it’s frustrating having to drive to see and tend them, but it is what it is for now. One of the beautiful things about life is that it’s constantly changing. Like a season full of pests for no reason ends, a year of absolute abundance changes and lessens. The natural cycles were so revolutionary when I learned that it was supposed to be that way. There are so many things! ‘Unlearning’ might not be the term I would give it. More of an expanding understanding with a better mindset. :) (I could go on and on for this one!)
ELECTROCULTURE
I’ve seen some info on electroculture. Has anyone used this method and was it a positive outcome? ELECTROCULTURE is a gardening technique that involves using electrical energy, often from the atmosphere, to enhance plant growth. The basic idea is to capture and direct atmospheric electricity into the soil to stimulate plant vitality and increase yields. This is often achieved by using copper wire or other conductive materials to act as antennas, capturing atmospheric energy and transmitting it to the soil through contact with the roots of plants.

@Pam Devine I hope you take progress photos to share!

@Katie Fuller it’s a single copper wire wrapped around sticks. Very basic and simple.
Newbie
Hi everyone! I'm new here and new to permaculture. I joined this group because I want to start learning about it. I've had a vision for several years now of buying land and starting a community, and I'm getting to the point where it's moving from a dream into reality. Before I buy the land, I want to have an idea of what permaculture is. Thanks for having me!

@Adrienne Smiley That’s what I do for a living though. Once we buy our own property we’ll leave the whole setup for her. I was just on a 17 acre property yesterday for a consult to build out the whole property to be a small permaculture farm for a retired couple. I own a permaculture landscaping company. We do water features, destination spots in backyards, but everything naturally. Never any chemicals!
