Contest: Rare Reading Recommendations
TLDR; Win one of my favorite books. Deadline Thursday, June 3, 2026 at 11:59 Eastern Time. Read anything good recently? Something that’s not very mainstream, but nonetheless entertained you, made you feel something, or taught you something. I don’t want recommendations for bestsellers or Kindle pirate werewolf romance smut. Whichever THREE people send me the best recommendations win a fantastic prize. 👉 I will mail you a copy of the most surprising and entertaining book on influence I’ve read in the past 10 years. (No, it’s not Influence by Cialdini. That would be lame.) You don’t need to be a marketer to get value out of this book—in fact, I believe it should be required reading for every business owner and digital entrepreneur. Let me have your recommendations—top three contestants by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on June 3 WIN. Drop a comment in this thread to participate (email replies don’t count):

I've enjoyed Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo Papers, especially volume 2: Generation of Swine. It's a book of short essays that often read like diary entries (they technically are), but I've learned a lot about writing from these books.

@Nick Bandy Hmm... that's difficult to pinpoint. I like the way he adds sensory details in his sentences. But there's a lot more. I guess my favorite thing about Thompson's Gonzo Papers is how he uses simple language (maybe because he's a journalist?) to get his point across, and be so effective, without the need to show off.
🧠 How smart is your governor? Money Lever 148
Quick quiz for you. Which of these license plates makes its respective state the most money, and why? You should be able to tell without looking up any revenue figures from state departments of transportation. Bonus Points: How can you use the same technique as the winning license plate in your business?

@Nick Bandy Changing my answer... maybe. On the one hand, I like that PA link is more prominent, but on the other hand, VA clarifies who VA is for... FOR LOVERS! It calls out the ideal customer... err... visitors. And then follows up with a link. Nice move.

@Paul Lester good idea
🏦 What was your biggest business expense last year?
It's everyone's favorite holiday--US Tax Day! For my biggest business expense? I was about to put "ads," but then I remembered it's not an expense...because they pay for themselves. Second biggest? I think it's a tie between BerserkerMail and Manus. Again, are these really "expenses" if I can't run my business without them? 🤔 Literally can't send emails without BerserkerMail...and Manus does so many things I can't even list them all. Look at this one-page website it built to help me study tourist Japanese for our trip in May: Learn Japanese with Nick-sama What's that one big biz expense you just can't quit?

@Cinthia Reyes I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking if I have affiliate links for the services I use? Some of them, yes. So I pay myself in my websites??? Unclear...

@Cinthia Reyes Ah, I see now. I don't keep a running list of everything I use. Everyone's needs are different. If you have a particular need for a tool, you can always ask here or in my community and I'm sure I and others can recommend stuff.

I think I banned complaining from this group. Somewhere. It's probably in the rules. Would you like to complain about clients? Working in isolation? Existential dread? They're all fair game. Possibly, we can come up with solutions here, too...and stop complaining. But where's the fun in that?

I think I also can't stand it when people are skeptical about everything, never buy, but have an opinion about everything I do... Maybe that's data, too, that I can use in some way in my sales process (objection handling?) but in the moment it happens, it makes me puke in my mouth a little bit.
