Nature Journaling
Sunday is when the Nature Journaling course begins. As often as I can, I'll make an entry daily and share them in the course. I'll put a few sample pages of my old nature journal in there for an example. This is a free one to join! Participants are encouraged to share theirs in the Share Your Work category here in the Community tab.

Woodpecker Holes
I see woodpecker holes all the time, but not often low enough for me to get a good look at them, lol. Here's two I noticed yesterday. I made a blog post just now about the random sorts of things I notice when I'm outdoors: https://www.wildozark.com/woodpecker-holes-mushrooms/

#2 Yellow rock
This rock was different than the first rock. It was harder and crunchier in the mortar. I’m curious what it’ll come out to be on paper but it looks like a nice gold crushed and the water is really golden yellow. Almost like LSU gold. Lol. 💜💛

Oh that's going to be a beautiful paint! I see you're washing this one, too, so that's very good. Where did you collect the rock? I'm always watching for good yellow like this and they're not very common, though the muddier looking yellow is easy to find.

😆 You got a coveted color in that kit 🤣 I'm glad you're going through start to finish. You'll hit the ground running if you decide to continue after this. Good job!
Washing phase
I am washing two pigments right now. This is #1 Red rock. I maybe should have used an alum solution you mentioned in the video. I started it on Saturday and waited until yesterday (Wednesday) to pour off the water. I decided the water was clear enough or wasn’t going to get much clearer. I think it will still come out fine. The third picture was to show the interesting way it settled in one jar. I think I could have poured off more water so I know it needs to settle a lot. You can see the #2 Yellow in the background. It is settling, you can see the layers. I’m not going to rush it but I’m wondering how clear the water should get. How do you make the alum solution?

Yes, after they sit for days like that and never clarify, that's when I add some alum. But honestly, the amount of pigment in the water won't amount to much in the end so it's just as fine to pour it off. Looking good!

To make the alum solution, I use about a tsp of alum to 2-4 oz hot water. Then I only add about a dropperful to each jar. Using too much alum can make your watercolors really hard to rewet once they've dried, so I use it sparingly as possible. I am not sure if it has any negative effect with oil paints yet.
