“Everybody should be thinking about AI, no matter what they do for a living.” - Lawrence H. Summers, Harvard Economist
AI Standards for Ethical and Responsible Use of AI - COA Accreditation
I stumbled on a document that may be of interest for folks interested in AI policy and governance at nonprofits in the nten forums and figured I would share with everyone in case someone was interested. It's not a thrilling read but there might be some good stuff in there to build off of. Here's a few interesting tidbits. 1. “AI may supplement human judgement and critical thinking but should never replace it.” 2. “The organization’s use of AI is aligned with its mission and values, minimizes risk, and prioritizes the well-being of people and communities.” 3. “Before implementing an AI strategy, the organization conducts a risk-benefit analysis that evaluates the potential impacts of AI on the organization and its stakeholders.” 4. “Stakeholders are helped to understand why, when, and how AI is being used, including what data is being collected, stored, and or shared.” 5. “When selecting commercially available AI tools, preference should be given to vendors that allow the organization to opt out of its data being used to train the model.”

I especially appreciate bullet point 5 in terms of practical conversations with vendors and tool providers!
Top 5 AI Assistants for Nonprofits - Excited to Share!
I just launched a new way to help nonprofits start using AI Assistants specifically built for them. I consolidated my top 5 AI assistants and made them publically available to everyone. Any nonprofit can get them for free and start using them to help with fundraising, sharing their story, or planning events. As a part of this community you have access to all of these plus more in the classroom. (check them out here) I would be so grateful if you all shared these with any nonprofits that could benefit! Here's the link to share! Top 5 AI Assistants for Nonprofits Thanks!

New ethical questions around AI that are keeping me up at night
AI is creating new ethical dilemmas we've never faced as humans before. Fundamentally new questions like... • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀? -This is happening now and people I know are getting constant advertisements for companions • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲? -Will reject this is go back to more in-person activities or be sucked in deeper to a more engaging internet? • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆? -Will people add a deceased parents and children to their smart speaker to keep talking to? • 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀? -This is the one that keeps me up at night? What new ethical questions are you considering?

The comment about deceased loved ones is so concerning to me. I am not sure that most people even have enough data to train a model for this, but vendors could exploit potential customers’ grief to obtain a lot of personal data on the deceased person and, by extension, the remaining family.
What do you all think about AI meeting notetakers?
I keep seeing them show up in virtual meetings and I have mixed feelings. I can see why they could be helpful but but they make me a little nervous. I don't know if I want to live in a future where every single meeting has 10 different recordings. What are your thoughts?

For what it’s worth, I personally follow the off-record —> on-record format to build rapport and comfort. I specifically indicate that when I am ready to start the notetaker, it’s a point in the meeting when we’re capturing ideas and takeaways that we don’t want to forget. We want the meeting to be impactful and actionable after we’ve hung up.
